Description

Aug, 20, 192-9; cup- 1,725,341 v .BOTTLE COVER Filed June '& 192s flddl'e Clifford Patented Aug. 20, 1929.
UNITED STATES ADDIE CLIFFORD, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
BOTTLE COVER.
Application filed June 5,
This invention relates to a cover designed primarily for use in connection with bottles such as used for holding milk and cream. One of the objects of the invention is to provide a simple, compact, and eflicient device of this character which can be applied readily to a bottle and which, when in position, will operate automatically to close after each pouring so as to protect the contents from dust and insects.
With the foregoing and other objects in View which will appear as the description proceeds the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings the pre-' ferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawings,
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a bottle 25 having the present improvements embodied thereto.
Figure 2 is a section on line 2-2, Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a side elevation.
Figure 4 is a front elevation.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference 1 designates an arcuate attaching plate extending through slightly more than one half a circle and provided at its ends and at an intermediate point with depending ears 2 adapted to fit snugly against and to grip the mouth portion of a bottle B. As the'ears are curved inwardly as shown particularly in Figures 3 and 4, it is obvious that the device can not be applied to the bottle simply by forcing it downwardly thereonto. In order to place it in position it is necessary to slide it diametrically across the end of the bottle at which time the ends of the arcuate attaching plate will spring apart until after they have passed diametrically opposed points at which time the plate will contract and thus firmly grip the bottle.
A portion of the inner edge of the arcuate plate 1 is straight as at 3 and has an up.-

struck portion 4 extending longitudinally thereof on which is provided a sleeve 5 constituting one member of a hinge. A cover plate 6 is adapted to rest on opposed por tions of the plate 1 and on the mouth of the bottle B and is provided with spaced sleeves 7 adapted to aline with the sleeve 5 and to receive a pivot wire 8 which extends through all of the sleeves. One end of this wire is extended a; an angle, shown at 9 and enters a small sleeve 10 extending from one side of g the plate 6. Thus it will be seen that the rod is caused to rotate with the plate. A depending arm 11 is provided at the other end of the wire which carries a weight 12. This weight is arranged to hold the cover plate 6 normally closed. It also constitutes a means for opening said plate when the bottle is tilted for the purpose of pouring out some of its contents.
It will be apparent that when the device is applied to the bottle it willact to exclude dust and insects so that the liquid contents will thus be kept clean. When it is desired to remove a portion of the contents the bottle 7 is tilted in the usual way whereupon the weight 12, which is carried downwardly by gravity, will hold the cover 6 so that a space will be formed between this cover and the mouth of the bottle thereby enabling the liquid to pour freely. As soon as the bottle is placed in an upright position the cover plate will swing to its closed position under the action of the weight.
This device can be made of any desired material which Will not corrode and can be easily cleaned. After a bottle has been emptied the closure can be removed readily therefrom and subsequently replaced on another bottle.
What is claimed is:
The combination with an arcuate attaching plate and means integral therewith for gripping the mouth portion of a bottle, said plate having an inte 'ral straight sleeve upstanding therefrom and extending trans versely thereof the plate being resilient and detachable from a bottle, of a closure adapted normally to rest upon the end of a bottle, angularly disposed sleeves integral with the 1 0 closure, a pivot Wire extending through all of the sleeves said sleeves constituting means for holding the Wire against rotation relative to the closure, one end portion of the pending arin oarri ed by the pivot Wire, and
a Weight carried by the arm, said Weight being positioned to hold the closure normally seated on the end of the bottle.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature.
ADDIE CLIFFORD.
