B. L. FORBES STRAW AND DISPENSER Filed June 17, 1930 INVENTOR:
.j 4 BH1/CEL FORBES,
Patented Sept. 29, 1931 UNITED STATES BRUCE L. FORBES, or New IiiAn'rINSvILLE, wnsfr VIRGINIA s'rnnw HOLDER Application filed June 17,
My invention relates to a new and useful straw holder and dispenser and more particularly to a straw holder and dispenser wherein means is provided for preventing the straws contained in said holder and dispenser from being accidentally dislodged therefrom due to careless manipulation.
My invention still further relates to a straw holder and dispenser wherein the means for i guarding against. the spilling or dislodging of the straws consists of and is carried entirely by strong metallic parts, thereby preventing the breakage of the body of the 4holder proper which is usually made of glass or other dec- 'l orative and fragile substance.
lt has been the practice heretofore to pro vide a stop carried by and protruding inwardly through the wall of the holder, said stop or lug being adapted to limit the upward 2G movement of the straw tray in the bottom of said holder when said tray is being raised to afford access to said straws. The repeated, more or less forceful impact of the metallic tray carrying the straws against the metallic f` 2i? stop embedded in the glass wall of the container resulted in fatiguing and ultimately breaking said wall. v
Other devices heretofore known and used for limiting the upward movement of the tray containing the straws have generally consisted of more or less complicated structures which directly or indirectly were carried by or supported on theglass wall of the straw holder, thus exposing said wall to fatigue and breakage due to rough or careless manipulation to which straw holders .and dispensers are necessarily subjected at thehands of the hurrying public. k I
It is therefore the object of my invention to provide a straw holder andv dispenser wherein the glass wall is not subjected to any strain and wherein the means for limiting the upward movement of the straw tray is carried by said tray in connection with a central rod or stem along which said tray is adapted lto slide. Y
To the above ends, my invention consists of a jar or holder, a central rod, carried by and projecting upwardly from the bottom of said holder, a stop carried by the top of said prod,
im DISPENSER 198i). fseriai no. 481,674.
a strawI tray movable within said holder upon Isaid central rod, a connecting sleeve slidable oversaid central rod and having its lower end secured to said straw tray, and a closure for said holder. carried by the top of said sleeve.
My invention. further consists of various other novel features of construction and ad-V vantage,V all as hereinafterY described and finally claimed.
' For the purpose of illustrating my invention I have shown in the accompanying drawings one *forml thereof which is at present preferred by me, since. the same has been vfound in practice to `give satisfactory and reliable results, although 'it is to be understood that the various instrumentalities of which 'my invention consists can be variously arranged and organized and that my invention isnot limited to the precise'arrangement and organization of the instrumentalities as herein shown and described. 'i
Inthe accompanying drawings i Fig; 1 represents aside elevation of a straw holder and dispenser embodyingl my invention; f f Fig. 2 represents a vertical sectional view online 2 5-2 of Fig.l l; f
jFi'g. 3 represents a transverse sectional view von line 343 of Fig. l;
Fig., L is a fragmentary vertical sectional view showing details 1of the construction.
'Referringto the drawings, in which similar numerals ofy reference eindicate corresponding parts, l` designates a straw holder Yand dispenser comprising a jar or other re-Y ceptacle 2, which isk usually made ofglass or any Vothery substance and which may be of any desiredl shape ory contour. 3 designates a guide rod which is preferably-secured to the bottom 3a; of the holder by meansof the nuts 9o 4 and flexible s gaskets or washers 5. On the 'rod 3 is adaptedv to slide vertically `the tray 6 which is adapted to fit within the-holder 2 anduwhichcarrie's the straws `7 of the type usually employed for sipping beverages in 'the' well known manner.k The tray 6 is secured tothe lower end of the sleeve Swhich carries at its upper end the closure 9 for the top of the container, and which is adapted to slide over the rod 3. When the tray 6 is `rodvwith the enlarged head or'st'op'll which yengages the liange l2 in the bottom of the sleeve 8, as will be understood; fromI Figs; 2
resting at the bottom 3m of the holder 2, the closure 9 fits over the open upper end of said holder and the straws 7 are completely enclosed within the jar or holder 2.
'When it is desired to use a straw, upward pull is exerted on the knob 10 of the lid or closure 9, thereby raising the tray 6 and straws 7 until said strawsproject a ove the top edge of the holder 2. n order to guard against excessive raising of the tray 6v and,"
the consequent spilling or dislodgingof the straws 7 out of the holder 2, I provide the It will thus be seen that I have devised'y a p novel straw holder. and dispenser of an eX- treinely simple and durable construction which prevents the accidental spilling or dislodging of the straws, and wherein the fragile glass wall of said holder is kept free from strain ork impact and thus'protected against breakage and fatigue.
.Vhile I have shown a stop,l l1 carried at the top of the central rod Sand adapted to engage the inwardly deflected flange 12', at the lower end ofthe sleeve 8, it is within the scope of m-y invention to vary these details or provide other novel means for limiting the movement of' the tray 6 in suchaV manner as to relieve glass wall 2 of therstraw container l, from fatigue due to constant, re.- peated strain which` results from. impact of theltray 6- against a stop carried by the wall of said container or holder.
I am awarethat they invention may be embodied in other specific forms without vdeparting `from the spirit or essential attributes thereof, and I therefore desire V:the present embodiment to be considered in all respects as illustrative and not restrictive,
reference being had to the appended'rclaim y rather than to the foregoing description to z indicate the scope of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
In a device or the `character stated, a: receptacle havingan open top .and va closed bottom,
a guide rod extending upwardly from and detachably engaging'said bottom, a tray slid- 4able on said rod, a stop .at the top of said: rod
for limiting the vertical movement ofxsaid A tray, a closure for the open top of said receptacle, anda sleeve connecting saidclosureand said tray and slidable over said rod, the latter extending substantially to the midheight of said receptacle, .and said sleeve being substantially the same length as said receptacle, andh a-ving` 4an inwardly deflected portion `en.- gaging said stop when elevated.
