To till was it may co nccrnfl Be t known that I, Jo -riv Di BERNARDI, a citizen of the United States, "residing at East Lynn, in the 'countyof Essexrantl State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Condiment Holders, of whichuthe following isza specification.

This invention relates .to, improvements in condiment holders and has more particular reference to a closure means for the usual perforated cap of a condiment holder for preventing the access of moisture into the holder when the contents thereof is not being used.

The primary object of the invention is to provide a closuremeans wherein the same will be automatically moved to a position away from the usual closure cap of the holder when the same is inverted for mani festly allowing the contents to flow therefrom, said means being further adapted to automatically close when the holder is positioned in an upright manner. An additional and important object is to provide a closure means for condiment hold ers of the above character that may be manufactured and marketed at relatively small cost and one that will operate effectively under all conditions.

With the foregoing and other objects in view, as the nature of the invention will be better understood, the same comprises the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawing and claimed.

In the drawing wherein like reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views:

Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a condiment holder equipped with a closure means for the openings of the holder cover or cap, said condiment holder being shown in an upright position,

Figure 2 is a view similar to Figure 1, partly in cross section, the holder being shown as tilted and said closure means be ing shown as having been automatically moved to an open position,

Figure 3 is an elevational View of the device ta-ken at right angles to Figure 1, and

Figure 1- is a fragmentary vertical sectional view through the upper end of the holder for more clearly disclosing the relative position spect .to the holder cover or cap.

New 'having niore particular reference to the drawing, 5 indicatesacondiment holder of any well known design and being preferziblfy of'sheet'metal, the upper open end of which is, as well known, screwth readed as at '6' for receivinga cap or closure 7, the top wall of which is in this instance inclined and provided with a plurality of outlets *8. The bottom wall of this holder '5 is preferof the closure means with reably formed with an opening 9 whereby material may be placed within the holder when the plug 10 has been removed from said opening.

My invention per se constitutes the pro vision of a metallic disk 11 that is provided upon its under side witha disk 12 of cardboard or other suitable material for engagement upon the inclined top wall of said cap or closure 7 of the holder 5 for closing the outlet openings 8 thereof when the disk 10 is automatically moved to the closed position shown inFigures 1, 3 and 4 in the manner hereinafter more fully de scribed.

Preferably formed integrally with and pendant from diametrically opposite sides of the metallic disk 11 are pendant legs 13-13 that extend downwardly at almost right angles to the disk upon opposite sides of the holder body 5. Rigidly connected to the lower ends of these legs 1313 are the inner ends of the arms 14 14 of a bale-shaped member 15 that at its central point carries a weighted member 16 for normally swinging the disk 11 to a position in engagement upon the inclined top wall of the holder cap or closure 7 it being understood in this instance that the points of connection between the arms 14l-14 of the bale 15 and the legs 1313 of the disk 11 are swingingly disposed up on lateral pins 1717 extending outwardly from opposite sides of the holder body 5.

It will thus be seen that when the holder is in an upright position as shown in Figure 1, the weighted niiember 16 will drop for maintaining the disk in position upon the inclined wall of the holdercap. However, when the holder is tilted in a manner as shown in Figure 2, this weight will drop in a reverse direction for manifestly swinging I the disk away from the holder cap for allowing the contents of the holder to d1scharge through the openings 8 in the top holder of this character will be at once appreciated by those skilled in the art and even though I have herein shown and described the most practical embodiments of the invention with which I am at this time familiar, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made in the invention without departing from the spirit and scope of the appended claim.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: a

A condiment holder and distributor comprising a receptacle having'a neck provided with a discharge opening, a cap applied to the neck, said neck having a central plane perforated portion covering the discharge opening, said plane portion being disposed at an acute angle to the central axis of said neck, a U-shaped bail, the arms of which are bent between their ends and provided at the juncture of the bend with pivot eyes, the upper portions of the arms extending upwardly in a vertical line from said eyes, and the lower portion inclining outwardly and downwardly, a counterbalancing weight carried by the intermediate portion of the bail, and a closing plateconnected to the free ends of the vertical portion of the bail arm, said blade being disposed at an angle with respect to said arm to permit it to tightly contact the inclined surface of said cap, when the receptacle is m an nprlght posltlon.
