Description

W. A.. COUCH.
PLOW-HANDLE. No.172,39%. Patented J'an.18, 1876.
WITNESSES ATTUBNEYS.
UNITED STATES,
PATENT OFFIGEc WILLIAM A. COUCH, OF HANNIBAL, MISSOURI.
IMPROVEMENT IN PLOW-HANDLES.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 172,394, dated January 18, 1876; application filed April 3, 1875.
To all whom it may concer/n:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. COUCH, of Hannibal, Marion county, Missouri, have invented anew and Improved Cast-Iron Plow-Handle, of which the following is a specification:
Figure l is a side View ot' my improved plow-handle, shown as attached to a plow; and Fig. 2 is a top View of the same, partly in section, through the line a* x, Fig. l.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
rlhe invention will first be fully described in connection with drawing, and then pointed out inthe claim.
A is the handle, the hand-piece of which is made with a Wide bar or strap, al, upon its upper and lower sides, rounded off upon the outer side, and connected and strengthened by connectingbars a2, making it an open-work hand-piece. Upon the side edge of the for- Ward end ofthe handle A are formed flanges a3, which project upon the sides of the upright of the plow-stock, and have holes formed in their forward ends to receive the bolt by which it is secured to the upright. Upon the upper and lower edges of the forward end of handle A are formed shorter ianges a4, to project upon the upper and lower edges of the said upright. The lianges a3 and a4 form a socket to receive the end of the upright of the plow-stock, and enable it to be secured rmly to said upright by a single bolt.- ln this way a light and strong handle will be formed, and one easily attached to the plow-upright.
I am aware that it is not -neW to make a socketed plow-handle of' metal, or to make castings of various ornamental open work vform; but
What I claim is- As a new article of manufacture, an open- Work socketed plow-handle, formed of strip al, bars a2, and langes a3 a, Yall substantially as shown and described.
WILLIAM A. GOUOH.
