To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, CHARLIE B. WILSON, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Bartow, in the county of Polk and State of Florida, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plow- Beams, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to plows, and the principal object thereof is to provide a novel beam whereby there will be no danger of the earth choking between the beam and the plow, thereby causing loss of time.
This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure l is a perspective view of a plow fitted with my improved beam. Fig. 2 is an enlarged view of a portion of the beam, showing the construction of the curved part. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a plow supplied with a modified form of the beam. Fig. 1 is an enlarged view similar to Fig. 2, showing a modified form of the beam. Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view of the plow beam, showing the angle of the portion 2. This angle is the same in both forms.
Referring to the accompanying drawings by numerals, 1 indicates a plow beam which is formed from a single piece of material and is provided intermediate its length with an outwardly-curved portion 2; the advantage of this structure will be brought out hereafter. The rear end of the beam is bent at approximately right angles to the portion 1 and is provided with openings 1 to permit the passage of bolts 5 to secure it to the frame 6, on which the blade 7 is mounted. The rear end of the beam is mounted upon a substantially T-shaped bracing member 6 by means of the bolts 5, the forward end of said bracing member being curved downward and secured to the upper portion of the plow blade. The portion 2 is bent at an angle of about 20 to one side of the portions 1 and 3; of course, this angle may be increased or decreased as the occasion requires. Said portion 2 of the beam comes directly over the end of the plow blade and it will be seen that, by means of this construction, when in use the dirt which is turned up by the blade has a clear passage under the beam, and, therefore, does not have any tendency to choke and thereby cause the plow to work very hard and also cause loss of time by having to stop and clean the plow. The forward end of the beam is provided with a hook 8 to which is connected the draft appliance.
In Figs. 3 and 4:, I have shown a modified form of the device, the portions 9 and 10 of which are similar in construction to the portions 1 and 2 with the difference, however, that the rear end is not bent as the portion 3 is but is in the same angle as the portion 9. The curved portion 10 is bent to one side similar to the portion 2. The rear end of portion 11 is secured to the handle 12 by means of the bolt 13, the handle-bracing member 14 being mounted upon the bolt between the end 11 and one of the handles; the other end of the brace is secured upon the opposite handle as clearly shown in Fig. 3. A vertical bar 15 has a curved end 16 which fits the curvature of the beam at the junction of the portions 10 and 11 and is secured by means of the bolts 17 which pass through the openings 18. The lower end of thebar is formed into a socket 19 to support a plow blade 20 and is braced by means of a diagonal bar 21 secured at one end near the socket portion of the bar 15 and the other end is secured upon the portion 11 of the beam. The forward end of the beam may be provided either with a hook, similar to hook 8, or with an eye 22, in which the hook of a draft appliance may be secured.
