KYLE B. FRIS AND JOSEPH D. WALKER, OF WHITESBURG, TENNESSEE.
FENDER FOR DOUBLE-SHOVEL FLOWS.
ySpecification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 310i, 1909.
To all whom it 'may eoncern:
lle it known that we, KYLE B. Finis and .losnrn l). li/'Annina eitizens ot the United States, residing at ll'hitesburg, in the county otillamblen and State ot Tennessee. have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fenders t'or Double-Shovel llows, ot' whieh the following is a Specification, reference being had to the aeeolnjninying drawings.
'lhis invention relates to improvements in tenders tor plows, eultivators and the like.
(lne objeet ot' the invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive and practical device ot this eharaeter which may be readilY attached to an ordinary plow or eultivator and whieh will etl'eetively prevent the earth from being thrown over upon young plants.
Another objet-t ot' the invention is to provide improved means tor mounting a fender otl this eharaeter and means whereby it will told when it strikesl a rook or other obstruction.. thereby preventing breakage ot' the parts. y
further objeet of the invention is to provide an impro.'ed clamping device for attaehing one of the hangers` otl the tender to a beam. l
With the above and other objects in view. the invention eonsists ot the novel featmes ot' eonstruetion and the combination and arrangement ot' parts hereinafter t'ully deseribed and eluimed. and illustrated' in the` aeeompanying drawings, in which l `ignre l is a side elevation of a double shovel plow or enltivator illustrating the applieation olI the preferred embodiment of the invention thereto; Fig. 2 is a vertical seetion taken on the plane indicated by the line l-Q in Fig. l lfig. Il isan enlarged vertical section through the clamp and pivot for the trout hanger ot' the tender; itig. 4 is a detail horizontal .seetion taken on the plane indieated by the line =l-l in Fig. 3; Figs. 5 and (i areI detail jna'speetive views ot the two angular members ot the clamp; and Fig. 7 is a detail perspeetive ot' the rear hanger Vfor tho l'ender. Y
ln the drawings l denotes` the beam, :2 the handles, 3 the standards and Ll the shovels otI a well known l'orm otl double shovel plow or eultivator.
'lho improved tender eomprises a vertically disposed, longitiulinally extending body 5 arranged to one side ot' the shovels fl and preferably in the torni of a flat plate of metal of substantially rectangular shape with its front end beveled or inclined down- 'ardl y and rearwardly. Said plate or Sheet 5 is preferably reinforced by two longitudinally extending metal straps or bars 7, 8 arranged along its upper edge on its opposite. sides and secured thereto by transverse bolts or similar tasitenin'gs 9.
The 'tender plate 5 is supported by means lot' t'ront and rear hangers 10, 11 which are preferably pivotally mounted and pivot-allv connected to the Ytender .so that the latter can swing vertieally in a longitiulinal direction. 'lhe 't'ront hanger l0 is in the form of a Strap having an otl'set upper end 1Q with a pivot opening and its lower portion is pivotally conneeted to the tender, preferablyv` by means ot the foremost bolt. 9.
'l`o permit` the tender plate to he adjusted vertieally, the hanger strap 1t) formed with a longitudinal series of openings 13. any one ot' whieh may reeeive the pivotI bolt t). Said hanger strap l() is ot' sueh length that its lower end l-l. whieh is beveled down- \\'ardly. dependsl rearwardly in front ot the beveled end ot' said plate and serves as a guard t`or said end. lt will be noted that the hanger l() is made of heavier material than the tender plate 5 so that the guard end ll will not'` be bent when it strikes a stone or other ohstruetion as would the edge ot' the tender plate. were the guard end 'l-l omitted. rThe. rear hanger ll is also in the t'orm ot' a metal strap having an ott'aet. lower end l5 pivoted at. lt to an extended rear end ot one or both ot the reinforcing bars T, 8. The upper end otI the hanger 1t is connected by a bolt, lT or other pivot to one ot the han dle barsl 2 or to any other suitable support and the distan/.ze between the two pivots in .said hanger il is preferably greater than the. distanee between the two pivots in the hanger l() so that the fender will move upwardly, as well as rearwardly, when the guard hl is struek by a. stione or other ob strut-tion. 'lhe rear hanger l1 may be formed with a longitudinal series of apertures 18, any one of which may receive the pivot 17 so thatl the rear portion of the tender may be adjusted vertically.
The pivot; opening in the upper'end 12 of the hanger .strap 10 is ada ted to receive a pivot. in the form of a cy indi-ical boss 19 formed integral with one member of a twopartI elamp adapted to engage the beam l. 'lhia clamp, as more clearly shown in Figs.
-the latter upon the pivot 19. .Y .that this improved clamp is so constructed 25 3 to 6 inclusive of the drawings, consists of two substantially right angular members 20, 21, which have overlapping arms slidably engaged and adjustably secured together by a bolt or the like 22 and the other arms of which are adapted to receive the beam 2 be* tween' them and to be retained in engage- -ment therewith by a bolt 23 or its equivalent passed through apertures 24 in said arms of the clamp members. ,The pivot boss ,19 is formed upon the overlapping arm of the angular member 2O and the corresponding arm of the other member 21 is formed with a longitudinal slot 25 to receive the bolt 22 and also with a longitudinal groove or recess 2G opposite the slot 25 for the reception of the head 27 of said bolt.v The bolt 22 also passes through a concentric opening 28 in the pivot boss or stud 19 and upon its projectin threaded end is arranged a washer a nut 30. The washer 29' is of such vsize that it engages thehanger 10 and retains It will be seen that it may be readil applied to a plow beam orthe like, of a most any size. This feature, to ether with the adjustable mounting of the anger 1l and the adjustable connection between the fender plate and the hanger 10, permits the invention t0 be adaptv 4ed to and used upon various kinds of plows,
cultivators, and the like.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed is:
1. The combination with a plow or the and front and rear hangers for pivotally 2. The combination with a plow or the like, of a fender, front and rear hanger straps, means, for pivotally mountin the front hanger strap to the plow, an adjust able connection between the fender and said front hanger, the lower end' of the latterbeing adapted to project in front of the forward end of the `tender to serve as a guard forthe latter, a )ivot connection between the rear hanger an the. fender and a pivotal connection between the rear hanger and the plow.
3. The combination with a plow or the like, of a fender consisting of a metal late with a downwardly and rearwardly inc ined front end, and a longitudinal reinforcing bar at the upper edge of the fender plate,- a front hanger strap adjustably pivoted intermediate its ends to said reinforcing bar, the lower end of the hanger strap being ada )ted to project in front of the lower end o the fender plate to serve as a guard, a rear hanger strap pivoted to the rear end of the reinforcing bar and means for pivotally mounting the upper ends of the hanger straps upon the plow.
In testimony whereof We hereunto affix our signatures in the presence `of two wit- E. L. RAnIiR, W. S. CAUCH.
