SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 352,279, dated November 9, 1886.
Application filed May 18, 1886. Scria1No.Qi)2,5-i1. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, IVIATHIAS CHARLES THEIsEN, of Diana, in the county of Sanborn and Territory of Dakota, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Harrows, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a plan view of a part of a barrow to which my improvement has been applied, arranged to give a flexible joint. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan View of a part of the same, arranged to give a rigid joint. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of a part ofa coupling-bar, partly in section, and shown locked. Fig. 5 is an elevation of a barrow-tooth.
The object of this invention is to provide harrows constructed in such a manner that they can be readily adjusted for use as a rigid harrow, a flexible barrow, a smoothing-harrow, or a straight-tooth harrow, and which shall be simple in construction and strong an durable in use.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of various parts of the harare made of such a depth that the lower surfaces of the parts of the said coupling-bars B between the tooth-bars A will be flush with the bottoms of the saidtooth-bars A.
The coupling-bars B are secured to the tooth-bars A by bolts 0, passing through the bends of the said couplingbars and through the 7 said tooth-bars as near the bottoms of the said tooth-bars as is practicable. The coupling-bars B are jointed between the adjacent tooth-bars A 'to make the harrow-sections flexible. One end of the parts of a bar, B,
forming a joint has a long slot iormed in it,
and is provided with an eye at the ends of its prongs to receive the hinging-pin D, which have lips G at one end, to engage with the bar B and prevent the said buttons from turning upon the said bar B. When the buttons F are arranged across the bar B, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the tongue will be free to play in its slot. When the buttons F are arranged longitudinally with the bar B, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the inner ends of the said buttons overlap the upper and lower sides of the end of the tongue and make the joint rigid. In this case a hole, H, is formed in the bar B at a little distance from the bolt-hole to receive the lips G, so that the said buttons will be held from turning. The boltEis provided with a nut, I, and fiejZLHl-Illlii, 'J, to hold the said bolt from working loose. With this construction the harrow-sections can be made flexible or rigid, as the work to be done may require.
The bars A are perforated to receive the teeth K, which are made of steel. The upper parts of the teeth K are made square, and their lower parts are tapered upon two adjacent sides, leaving one edge of the said teeth straight from end to end. The teeth K are inserted in the bars A, with their straight edges toward the same side of the harrow, so that when the draft is applied to that side of the said harrow the harrow will operate as a straight-tooth harrow, but when the draft is applied to the other side of the harrow the said harrow will operate as a smoothing-harrow.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The herein-described coupling for. har rows, consisting of the bars B, each provided with a bend for receiving the tooth-bars, and one formed with a slot and the other with a tongue pivoted in said slot at the ends of its prongs, and buttons pivoted to one bar for locking the free end of the tongue in the slot, I whereby the hinge-joints of the coupling-bars as set forth. can be made rigid, as set forth.
2. In a harrow the combination with the t00th-bars A and the coupling-bars B, hav- MATHIAS CHARLES THEISEN' 5 ing hinge-joints, 0f the buttons F, having lips Witnesses:
G, and the fastening-bolts E and nuts I J sub- JOHN E. WRITING, stantially as herein shown and described, FRANK M. LORING.
