IMPROVEMENT IN GLQVES.

Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 172,345, dated January 18, 1876; application filed March 4, 1875.

To all whom 'it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. RowLEs, of Johnstown, in the county of Fulton and State of New York, have invented air Improved Glove or Mitten, of which the following is a specication:

To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct the same I will proceed to describe it as follows:

The object of my invention is to. make a glove or mitten more ornamental as well as more comfortable, by the application of an independent button-lap over the Wrist-slit,whicl1 may be made ot' similar material as the body of the glove, or of any other suitable and ornamental material, and bound With fur, morocco, or any other band round its entire edge, and then secured on one of its sides to the body of the glove, and so overlapping the other side of the wrist-laps that it may be buttoned over, so as to close the wrist-slit. The said independent button-lap extends upward toward the wrist, in order that it may serve to strengthen the glove or mitten, and to serve as a strap with which to draw the glove on the hand of the wearer; button-holes being formed in said ornamental piece, and buttons being sewed on the body of the glove opposite to the side to which the said independent lap is att-ached or sewed on, thus effectually closing the slit in the Wrist.

I am aware that pieces of similar material of which the body of the glove is formed have long since been in use to cover the wrist-slit; but in those instances the lap-piece or button-lap was not provided with a projecting end or binding round its entire edge but was sewed first to one edge of the slit, and then the Wrist-binding was sewed round and into the overlapping slit, instead of encircling the lap, as is the object ot' my invention; nor did such wrist-laps extend outward from the glove, as in my invention, for the uses of a strap with which to draw the glove on the hand.

Figures l and 2 are plan views of gloves representing my invention attached thereto.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.

A represents the body of the glove or mitten. B exhibits my independent button-lap. The .dotted lines y represent the wrist-slit in the body of the glove. c c are button-holes through the lap, as shown in Fig. 1. D represents a t'ur binding round the wrist, as also round the button-lap B, as will be seen in Fig. 2.

It will be observed by reference tol y, Fig. l that no binding is necessary in the slit of the wrist, as has heretofore been used, as thel lap B entirely conceals said slit. The lap B serves as a strap by being extended, or projects upward, as shown in the drawings at z,

in order to serve as a strap with which to draw the glove on the hand. D exhibits a narrow binding, which will also contrast well with the lap B, as shown in Fig. 1, and said binding answers also to strengthen the independent lap B. The extension or projection z also adds beauty to the glove.

The wrist-slit of the body of the glove is represented by dotted lines at y, Fig. l, over which the lap B is placed. c represents, in Fig. 1,-the stitching which attaches the lap B to the body A.

It will be seen by reference to the drawing that the lap D D covers or rests on the wrist' binding of the body ofthe glove. Hooks and eyes maybe substituted for the buttons, as will be readily perceived.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

ln combination with a glovebody, A, the independent lap or strap B, the same being formed with the extension or projection e', and bound round its entire edge, as shown and described.
