Specific'ation forming part of Letters Patent No. 172,19 l,l dated January 11,-1876; application filed December 20, 1875.
CASE T.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM E. SPARKS, of New Hav'en, in the State of Connecticut, have invented an Improved Oloset-(Jatch, of which the following is a specification:
This catch is provided With a sliding latch, having a knob upon the back part, and a stud projecting through a mortise in the plate. A spring behind the plate enters a notch in the studland serves to project the Iatch,and also to hold the back end thereof, so that it will not fall away from the plate.
This latch is very cheap to construct, as well as being durable and efficient, and the plate and latch are so made that they can be cast, and will require little or no hand labor, and the spring prevents them separatin g when in use.
In 'the drawing, Figure 1 is an elevation. 1`ig. 2 is a sectional plan at the line x w, and Fig. 3 is a rear View of the said spring closetcatch.
The plate a is made with a rim, b, at the back, that does not pass behind the end of the latch o, but allows the back part of the loop orbridge e, behind which said latch slides, to be open, to facilitate the molding and casting. There is also a mortise or slot, i, in this plate for the stud 0 at the back of the latch o to slide in, and a knob or thumb-piece, h, of
suitable Shape is provided upon the latch for drawing back.
The parts are put together by entering the beveled end of the latch beneath the bridge e, and passing the stud 0 back through the slot i. This stud is notched or undercut to receive one arm of the spring l, which acts to project the latch, and also to prevent the stud o drawing out of its slot in the plate a, because the said spring is between the overhanging portion of the stud and the back of the plate a.
Suitable -screw-holes are provided for attachin g this closet-catch, and a strike or keeper of usual kind is provided for the end of the catch.
I claim as my invention- The latch o, provided with the stud o, that is undercut, in combination with the slotted plate a, bridge e, and spring Z, that enters the notched or undercut portion of the stud, and retains the latch to the plate, as well as project-ing said latch, as set forth.
