IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED LATCH AND BOLT..

Be it known that I, PAS-CAL P. CHILD, of St. Louis, inthe county of St. Louis, and State of Missouri, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Lock Latches; and I do herebyr declare that the following is a full and clear description thereof, referencev being had tothe accompanying drawings, and to Athe letters of reference marked thereon. l

This invention relates to an improvementin that-class of door-latches which are provided with a locking or stop-device, that prevents the 'latchbeing opened when required. I

The improvement consists in a combination of a sliding-bolt latch with a peculiarly-constructed striker and keeper, by which means the latch can be used either as a latch or a bolt, ns may be desired, as will hereinafter more fully appear.

To enable those skilled in the art to make and use my improved latch, I will proceed 'to describe its c oustruction and operation. i

In the present invention the construction of the latch and its application are both simplified and cheapened by having the said guard-piece ai cast as a part ofthe face-plate, as is shown in tig. 1. The back end of the face-plateis cast with a seat, into which the rear end of the latch enters, and where it is pivoted by means of the screw al, which performs the double oiice of assembling theparts, and securing the latch to the door. Two segmental perforations, 'c c1, are made in the back end of the latch C, which perforations are connected by a slot, c2, of, say, halt an inchin length, more or less. The width of the slot c is just sufficient to allow the screw a1 to be pressed through it, while the' perforations ce1 are of such a size as will allow the saidy screw a] to lturn very easily therein. The diameter of the perforations should be, say, one thirty-second of an inch, (more or 1e`ss,) larger than the width ofthe intervening slot; The keeper and striker D, which is secured to the jamb or casing of the door, for the engagement ofthe end .of the latch when the door is closed, is constructed with a. hasp-rail, d, (under which the latch slides when acting as a bolt, or l,ock,) and two. lug-plates, di, by' means of which it is secured to the jamb or casingby means of wood-screws in the usual manner. The front projections of the plates :Z1 terminate in lugs d2, which are so disposed as to'leave a notch, d", between them, into which notch the end of the latch projects when used as u. latch, as is clearly' shown in iig. I. The back sides of the adjacent .ends of the said lugs are rebated, so as to form notches intowhich the Ylatch drops when closed, and bythis arrangement the door is securely latched. The outer side Aof the contiguous ends of the lugs al2 are bevelled cti so as to allow the latch to slide upon themiwhen the door shuts. I Both ends ofthe keeper and striker'are made similar in this manner, so that the latch may be 4applied toa right o'r a left-hand door. The handle E and the` thumb-piece F are made in the usual manner, and need not be minutelyrdescribed. -When this latch is to be used as a bolt or lock, the latch will. be thrown forward under the hasp-rail d, as shown by red lines in figul,
