Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM Ii.'MOWRY, OF GREENWIOH, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN CORNER-CLAMPS FOR TRUNKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 171,948, dated January 11, 1876; application filed December 27, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM L. MOWRY, of Greenwich, Washington county, New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Corner-Pieces for Trunks, of which the followingis a specification:
My invention relates to what are commonly called corner-pieces for trunks-that is to say, metallic strips or plates bent to fit the angles or edges of trunks and like articles, and designed to prevent injury to the trunk at these points. i
I am aware that plain metallic strips have been used for this purpose. .I am also aware that ships with protuberances or projections have been used. 1' am further aware that it has been proposed to use corrugated sheet metal for a like purpose.
The corner-piece l have devised is intended to clasp any portion of the corner or edge of a trunk. The characteristic feature of the device is that it is corrugated or bent along each of its longer edges, the bent portion standing at about right angles to the body of the piece, and the edges projecting rearwardly to'such an extent that, when the corner-piece is fitted to the trunk, they will be in contact with and bear against the trunk. By thus forming the corner-piece 1 im part to it great strength and stiffness, and at the same time adapt it to be more readily, easily, and closely fitted to the trunk, since the edges alone come in actual contact with the trunk, except, of course, the ends of the corner-piece, where the devices that fasten the same to the trunk are applied.
The accompanying drawing represents a corner-piece made in accordance with my invention.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a cornerpiece, A, with corrugated or bent-over edges,
(0, protuberances or projections b for afi'ording additional protection, and perforated ends 0, through which pass the nails that fasten the device to the trunk. Fig. 2 is a like view of acorner-piece similar in all respects to the one shown in Fig. 1, save that it has noprotuberances b. Fig. 3 is a section of the corner-piece in Fig. 2, the line of section passing vertically through the bend or angle of the device.
By reference to this figure it will be seen that the corrugations are so formed as to turn over the edges at about right angles, and that these edges project rearwardly beyond the rear face of the body of the corner-piece, for the purposes hereinbefore specified.
The corner-piece is made of sheet metal, and
'is shaped in a stamp-wheel press, in dies, or
by other suitable means.
Having described my invention, and the manner in which the same is or may be carried into effect, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A sheet-metal corner-piece for trunks, corrugated or bent along its longer edges, as described, whereby said edges are turned over at about right angles, and project rearwardly, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name this 24th day of December, A. D.
WM. L. MOWRY.
