CLAMP.
APPLICATION FILED SEPT.20, 1905.
W a uni MIMI;
nu uu nn 1 lUlTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EARNEST R. WVINGATE, OF SPOKANE, WASHINGTON.
CLAMP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 2, 1906.
Application filed September 20, 1905. Serial No. 279,207.
This invention relates to an attachment for trunks, boxes, or other receptacles; and it consists of a device, formed in any approved manner and from any suitable material,
which is adapted to serve as a clamp or housing for either a strap or a rope, or both to gether, to be placed around the receptacle and also serves as a protection for the corner or edge of the latter, to which the device is applied.
The especial object of the improvementswhich form the subject-matter of this application is to provide a device of this character which will be stiff and strong enough to form an effective knee brace or clamp for the edges of the receptacle and at the same time serve as a protection for the strap or rope, or both together, which are slidably arranged therein.
My improved device is formed from a single piece of metal or suitable material in which two longitudinal grooves are formed, one groove being wide and shallow or flat for a strap and the other extending from the bottom of said flat groove and being rounded for a rope or cord. Side flanges are formed in which suitable nail-holes are provided for attaching the clamp to the trunk or receptacle.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this application, Figure 1 shows in front elevation a trunk to which my invention is applied when both strap and rope are used together. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of my device, showing it applied to a section of strap and rope together. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section through a portion of a trunk or box and my device applied thereto, both rope and strap being shown. Fig. 4 is a side edge view of my invention, and Fig. 5 is a cross-section through Fig. 4.
Referring to the details of the drawings, it will be seen that my invention consists of a single piece of suitable material, as D, formed with a fiat or shallow groove d extending longitudinally throughout its length and with flanges d extending at right angles from the side walls of said groove. In the bottom (looking at the inner surface) of the groove (1 and along its median line is formed a second groove (1 which is of greater depth, but less width, than the first-named groove and is rounded or semicylindrical in'c'rosssection. The strip of metal in which said grooves are formed is bent at right angles, as shown, when it is to be a plied to a right-angled surface or cover 0 a receptacle, or it maybe bent to conform to any other contour.
Preferably the device described is formed by stamping with a suitable die the grooves described, thus stiffening the material, so'
that even a thin piece would be sufficiently strong to serve as an effective protection for the corner or edge to which it is applied. Holes d are provided in the flanges d to receive attaching nails or rivets.
A represents a trunk to which my devices may be applied, as shown.
Straps B are slidably arranged in the grooves d of the clamps and have their ends buckled together. Oords or ropes O are arranged in the grooves d so as to slide over the surface of the straps, thus permitting them to be drawn tightly around the trunk. It will be apparent that the ropes being outside or over the straps will serve as a protection for the latter.
It will be understood that these clamps will be made in different sizes, so as to permit their use with various sizes of straps and ropes.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- 1. An angular clamp of the class described, composed of a single piece of suitable material having longitudinal grooves formed therein, one of said grooves extending along the bottom and forming a continuation of the other groove.
2. An angular clamp of the class described, composed of a single piece of metal having longitudinal grooves formed therein, one of said grooves being shallow and wide and the other groove being relatively narrow and rounded in cross-section, said second groove extending from the bottom of the first groove and forming a continuation thereof.
3. An angular clamp of the class described, composed of a single piece of metal having side flanges with holes therein, and between said flanges, provided with two longitudinal grooves, one of said grooves being wide and I In testimony whereof I a'ffix my signature shallow and adapted to slidably receive and in presence of two Witnesses.
house a flat strap, and the other groove extending along the bottom of the first-named EARNEST WINGATE 5 groove and adapted to slidably receive and Witnesses:
house a rope or cord, substantially as de- G. P. PARSONS, scribed. J. C. PARSONS.
