Description
B. MORAHAN FRYING-PAN. No. 171,580. Patented Dec. Z8, 1875.
WW i' Ss j wf UNITED STATES vPATENT OFFICE.
BERNARD MORAHAN, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN FRYING-PANS. I
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N o. 171,580, dated December 28, 1875; application led June 3, 1875.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, BERNARD MORAHAN, of Brooklyn, Kings county, in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements relating to Frying-Pans, of which the following is a specification:
I have devised an efficient and simple means by which to avoid what is a quite serious dificulty in the use ot' the ordinary frying-pan,
especially after it has become a little distorted by use. The bottom, which should be plane, becomes slightly rounded or dishing after a time, and thus conditioned the weight of the handle is sufficient to slightly tilt the vessel, and cause the fluid contents to accumulate on the side nearest the handle, leaving the other portions ofthe bottom dry.
It is important to the use of the article as a frying-pan that there should be no legs, ordinarily so called, to hold the bottom up from the surface of the stove or the like on which it shall rest. I have overcome the difficulty by providing a brace analogous to a leg, but outside ofthe bottom proper, and standing in such position as to bear upon the stove or other surface on which the frying-pan is supported, and resist the tendency of the vessel to tilt. l make such brace without appreciable increase of the costot' the structure, by forming it from the same piece of material as the handle, and consequently secured by the same fastenings.
My invention consists in producing a fulcruni between the pan and the handle, and that fulcrumis a continuation of the handle, and this tulcrum `may be brought. out from or be tight against the bottom edge of the pan, as may be desired.
The following is a description of what I consider the best means of carrying out the in- Vention.
The accompanyingdrawing forms a part of' this specification, and represents a side view of my improved frying-pan.
Referring to the drawing, A is the body of 'ly dishing by use or abuse, the brace D prevents the weight of the handle from tilting the structure. When, by reason of the bottom becoming very dishing, or from any other reason the trying-pan shall incline a little, it
is easy to remedy the diliculty by bending the brace D so that it shall stand more perpendicular, and thus hold that side ot" the frying-pan up higher.
I believe it will be practicable to determine by observation the amount ot' dish which a bottom ot' given material is likely to assume, and to give just the proper amount ot' extension to the arm or brace D, so that it will never require any alteration. It is sufficient it' it extends only enough out and enough belo7 the bottom to always give atair and irm bearing at that point, and prevent tilting by bringing the entire body ot' the pan von the opposite side of such bearing-point from the handle.`
I claim as my invention in trying-pans- The brace D, formed by a continuation of the handle down to the plane of the bottom of the pan, to form a tirm bearing or fulcrum between the pan and handle, for the purpose set forth.
In'testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 29thA day ot' May, 1875, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
BERNARD MORAHAN.
