UNITED STATES LOUIS LEVIN, OF GALVESTON, TEXAS.
HAT ATTACHMENT.
Application led June 9, 1928. Serial No. 284,148.
This invention relates to certain novel improvements in hat attachments, and has for its principal object the provision of an improved construction of this character, which will be highly .eicient in use an economical in manufacture.
It is among the objects of my invention to provide a device which may be associated with hats in order that the size thereof may be reduced and this consists of providing a device which will be adjustable, in order that it maybe used with hats'of varlous sizes.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of the above named characterwhich may also be used as a size arrester so as to prevent stretching of hats and in'addition the device functions to maintain the hat shape.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a device in the above named character which may be positioned behind the sweat-band in the hat and which will be made of a material such that perspiration will be prevented passing therethrough so as to avoid Soilin of a ribbon on a hat and in addition the evice may be made of a Width such that it will extend beyond the sweat-band and serve to maintain the hat in shape. y
A still further object of the invention is to arrange a device of the above named type in such a manner that it may be expeditiously reduced in size so as to hold the hat on the wearers head in Windy or other inclement Weather.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein a preferred form of construction is shown, and in which:
Fig. 1 is an elevational view depicting a manner in which my improved device is associated with a hat;
Fig. 2 is a front elevational view of a preferred form of construction;
Fig. 3 is a side elevational view of the device as illustrated in Figure 2;
Fig. 4 is a fragmental view substantially similar to Figure 2, depicting a modified form of construction;
Fig. 5 is a side view of the device as illustrated in Figure 4;
Fig. 6 is a fragmental view of a further band 11 being folded back as illustrated in y Figure 1. to 4 facilitate the insertion of my improved device.
My improved device as illustrated in Figures 1, 2, and 3, comprises a body member 13 preferably formed of a suitable flexible material such as relatively stiff paper, Celluloid, or the like. The body 13 has the side edges thereof arranged so as. to embody a taper such that a wide end 14 is provided, opposite which is a relatively narrow end 15. At the wide 4end 14 a lateral opening 16 is provided. Inasmuch a"s the body 13 is formed of flexible material it is apparent that it may be bent into substantially circular shape and therefore, the narrow end 15 may be directed lthrough the opening 16. Arranged in longitudinal alignment adjacent the relatively wide end 14, and disposed substantially on the center line of the body 13, are a plurality of openings 17. Arranged in alignment with the opening 17 are suitable indicia indicated at 18 which are adapted to indicate various hat sizes. When the member 13 is disposed in circular formation such that the end 15 is directed through the opening 16, a suitable securing element 19 is disposed in alignment with the vopenin 17 and by inserting the element 19 throug one of the openings'17 the proper hat size may be selected. As is best illustrated in Figure 2, the element 19 includes an enlarged head 20 and has a stem portion 21 that extends through a suitable opening in the member 13 such that the base portion 22 thereof will serve .to retain it in position. The'enlarged head 20 is inserted through one of the openings 17 so as to retain the device in said circular formation.
In Figures 4 and 5, I have illustrated a slightly .modified form of construction. Herein the body member 13 is corrugated as indicated at 23 so as to impart greater iexibility thereto and also to render it easier on the head of the wearer. The remaining portion of the device is constructed in substantially similar manner, as illustrated in Figures 2 and 3, and as clearly illustrated in Figures 4 and 5, corrugations 23 extend transversely across the bodymember 13.
In Figures 6 and 7, a further modified form of construction is depicted. .Herein, the body member 13 adjacent the wide end 14 is provided with longitudinally extending slots 24 through which the headed end portions 25 of securing elements 26, that are substantially similar to securing elements 17, are extended. This construction causes the body member 13 to be held in position properly, and after inserting in the Inanner indicated in Figure 1, the element 26 moves through the slots 24 so as to cause the member to assume the proper size, dependent upon the hat with which it is associated.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification, without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth herein, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come Within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
1. A hat size reducer comprising a body portion having an opening adjacent one end thereof through which the opposite end of said body member may be extended, and means for securing said opposite end of said body member after extension through said opening whereby said body member may be arranged in substantially circular formation.
2. A hat size reducer including a body portion adapted to have the sides thereof tapered whereby to provide a wide end and mation, and means for securing said narrow end after extension through said openlng.
3. A hat size reducer including a body portion adapted to have the sides thereof tapered whereby to provide a wide end and a narrow end, said body portion having a transversely extending opening adjacent the wide end thereof through which said narrow end may be extended so as to dispose said body member in substantially circular formation, said body member hav- .ing a plurality of openings provided there- 1 n disposed in longitudinal alignment adjacent the wide end thereof, a securing element on said body member adjacent the narrow end thereof adapted to be selectively inserted through one of said o enings whereby to retain said member in su stantially circular formation.
4. A hat size reducer including a body portion adapted to have the sides thereof tapered whereby to provide a wide end and a narrow end, said body portion having a transversely extending opening adjacent the Wide end thereof through which said narro w end may be extended so as to dispose sa1d body member in substantially circular formation, said body member having a plurality of openings provided therein disposed in longitudinal alignment adjacent the wide end thereof, a securing element on said body member adjacent the narrow 4end thereof, adapted to be selectively inserted through -one of said openings whereby to retainsaid member -in substantially circular formation.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
LOUIS LEVIN.
