Description

J. MITCHELL.
SHUTTER-BOLT.
Patented N ov.16,1875.
N-PETERS, PHDTO-LIMOGRAP"ER, WASHINGTONv D 0.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN MITCHELL, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN SHUTTER-BOLTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 170,104, dated November 16, 1875; application filed October 2, 1875.
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, JOHN MITcHELL, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented an Improved Shutter Bolt and Retainer, of which the following is a specification:
The object of my invention is to construct a simple and efficient device which can be used either for lockin g or unlocking shutters, or for retaining the same in a bowed condition; and this object I attain in the manner which I will now proceed to describe, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view, illustrating my improvement; Fig. 2, an enlarged section of a portion of the same; and Fig. 3, a plan view, showing the manner of using the bolt as a shutter-retainer. Y
A and B are two flat plates, secured one to one shutter, X, and the other to the other shutter, X. To the plate A is pivoted a bar, D, by means of the pin a, and the plate B is provided with two hooked projections, E E, within which the bar can rest, as shown in Fig. 1. The outer end of the said bar D is provided with an eye, I), and its inner end is adapted to a.hooked projection, d, near the outer end of the plate A, this projection receiving and retaining the inner end of the bar when the shutters are looked. The bar D is retained in the horizontal position, (shown by plain lines,) as well as in its vertical position, (shown by dotted lines,) by means of a springbolt, f, the enlarged inner end of which fits into one or other of two openings, 9 and h, in the plate A, according to the position. of the bar.
When the device is to be used for retaining the shutters in a partially-closed position the eye I) on the end of the bar D is placed over one of the hooked projections E, and the'said bar is then adjusted to a horizontal position, where it is retained by the spring-bolt f, so that any movement of either of the shutters is effectually prevented.
I claim as my invention- 1. The plate A, having the hooked projection (1, and carrying a pivoted bar, D, provided at its outer end with an eye, b, in combination with the plate B and its two hooked-projections, E E, all substantially as setfortlh.
2. The bar D and its spring-bolt f, in combination with the plate A and its openings g and h, as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN MITCHELL.
