Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 23, 1908.
Application filed February 21, 1908. Serial No. 417,216.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, ROBERT D. BROWN- ING, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Orange, in the county of Orange and State of Virginia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Latch- Keepers for Gates, of which the following is Another object of the invention is to provide a simple, strong and durable latch keeper which can be manufactured at small cost and which can be adjusted quickly to the required height relatively to the latch.
These and other objects may be attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which,-
"Figure 1 is a front elevation of a gate, showing my latch keeper in place thereon. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of one of the gate posts and showing my latch keeper secured thereto. Fig. 3 is a side View of a post and showing my latch keeper in section secured to said post. Fig. 4 is a section on the line 44 of Fig. 3, looking in the direction indi- Fig. 5 is a detail section on the line 55 of Fig. 3, looking in the direction indicated by the arrow.
Referring to the drawing for a more specific description of my invention, the nu meral 1 in Fig. 1 designates the hinge post of a gate, and 2 is the gate hinged to said post by means of the hinges 3. The gate is provided with a pivoted latch 5 pivoted at 6 and provided with a guard 7. The latch post 1 has a latch keeper secured thereto made in accordance with my invention.
The latch keeper comprises a strip of sheet metal consisting of an attaching member 8, an upwardly inclined portion 9 which is bent at 10 to provide an inclined upper member 11 which is bent downward at 12 and backward at 13 and downward at 14. The portion 14 is provided with two pairs of perforations 15 disposed in parallel relation for a purpose which will presently appear.
From the upper end of the base portion 8 a brace member15 extends forwardly and is provided with a tongue 16, said tongue extending through a slot 17 formed at the bent portion 10, said tongue being bent down and under the inclined portion 9, as shown more particularly in Fig. 3.
This latch keeper is exceedingly simple in construction, is strong and durable and may be adjusted readily to the required height relatively to the latch 5 by means of the screws 18. If it is required to raise the portion 13 of the latch keeper the screws 18 are withdrawn, and the base portion 14 of the keeper is raised until the lower pair of perforations 15 come into register with the perforations in the member 8, when said screws 18 are reinserted and connected to the post 1 in an obvious manner. The latch 5 will ride over the inclined portion 11 of the latch keeper, and the bent portion a of the keeper I bears against the latch to prevent the gate from rattling.
From the foregoing it will be obvious that my gate keeper is of simple construction, can be quickly applied to a gate, is efficient in use and can be adjusted to the proper height relatively to the latch.
Having thus described the invention, What is claimed as new, is
1. A latch keeper comprising a metal strap secured to a ate post and provided with an upwardly inc ined portion on which the pivoted latch rides, a downwardly extending portion, a backwardly extending portion, and an attachin portion, the latter being provided with e orations for adjustment, and a forwardl y extending brace having a tongue projecting through an aperture in the kee er and bent down, substantially as describe 2. A latch keeper for gates, comprising a pivoted member and a keeper therefor, said eeper comprising a sheet metal strap having a base or attaching portion, an inclined portion forming a surface on which the latch rides, a downwardly extending portion, a backwardly extending part, and an adjustable base rovided With a brace having a tongue ro ecting through an aperture in the front 0 the keeper.
