This invention relates to sweat bands for head coverings such; as caps and similar devices, the invention herein disclosed being a division of the parent application for-United States Letters Patent filed by me June 23, 1927, bearing Serial Number 201,002, and having for an object to provide a head covering sweat band whereinthe band is so shaped and constructed that it may be effectually adjusted and will, with wearing of an equipped head covering, snugly engage over a portion of the wearers-head in a manner to retain the hair in a neatly or; properly combed and groomed condition, thereby avoiding d1sarrangement or mussing of the hair asis commonly experienced with the wearing of; caps having the. conventional design of sweat bands therein.

Other objects of the invention will be in part obvious and in part pointed out hereinafter.

In order that the invention and its mode of operation may be readily understood by those skilled in the art to which it appertams, I have in the accompanying illustrative drawings and in the detailed following descriptlon based thereupon, set out one possible embodiment of my invention.

In these drawings:

Figure 1 is a bottom plan view of the improved sweat band showing the same applied to a cap type of head covering and Figure 2 is a transverse section through the same.

Having more particular reference to the drawings in connection with which like characters of reference will designate corresponding parts, I have, as hereinbefore indicated illustrated in this particular application, the improved sweat band as being arranged 111 a cap type of head covering indicated in its entirety by the numeral 1, the sweat band being of generally circular formation when arranged in the cap and composed of leather, imitation leather or of other suitable material, one marginal portion of which is stitched or otherwise suitably joined to the circular head receiving opening or border of the cap as is indicated by the numeral 2. The forward and rearward head engaging portions of the band 2 are formed comparatively narrow as is indicated by the numerals 3 and 4 whereas the opposite side head engaging portions of said band are materially widened as is indicated by the numerals 5 and 6, these HEAD COVERINGS. widened opposite side portions being sized lflcordmg tothe particular size or dimension of an equipped cap, as for example, they are approximately five inches wide in a cap of theconvent-ional head size numbered seven, whereas an equipped cap of a greater or lesser size would require a variance of dimensions accordingly. 4

Consequently upon this, it will be understood that with arrangement of the cap upon the head of a wearer, the widened portions 5 and 6 of the band 2 will have snug engagement or disposit1on over the wearers hair and because of this, the hair so engaged which will constitute the major portion of the suit, will be positively retained in neatly and properly combed or groomed condition against disarrangement or mussing during the period for which the cap is worn or possibly shifted during such-wearing upon the wearers head. Furthermore, it will be understood that because of the engagement of the widened opposite sides 5 and 6 of the band 2 over the major portion of the hair of a wearers head, the equipped cap may be readily removed from the head without liability of disarranging the grooming of the same, especially because of the fact that the body portion of the cap proper will be prevented from coming into striliing or rubbing engagement with the hair dur ng removal of the cap or for that matter, during engagement or placing of the same upon the wearers head or adjustment thereof subsequently to such placement.

With a view toward providing the improved form of sweat band with means whereby the same may be minutely adjusted to the head of a wearer to the desired nicetv in order that an effectual retention of the hair ]I1 properly combed or groomed arrangeinent will be insured, I secure to the inner marginal portion of one of the widened parts of such band (the widened part 5 herein) one end of a transversely disposed strap or flexible piece 8, as isindicated at 9, the opposite or free end of said strap carrying the socket element of a separable fastener or so-called ill ,snap 10, which, as is shown in the Figure 7 2, is adapted to be selectively engaged with Wardly disposed or free portion of the Wid v ened part 6 of the band 2 Because of this provision of the strap 8 and the separable fasteners constituted by the elements 10 and 11, it Will be seen that the wearer of a vcap equipped with the improved bandmay eflectually adjust the sweatband to a position whereat it will comfortably and efficiently engage over .his head, subsequently to which the cap may be quickly and conveniently engaged with the head and comfortably worn with the assurance of retention of the wearers hair in position and against undesirable disarrangement. i

I claim: a

A hair retainer for caps comprisinga dome shaped body portion, means for attaching the lower edges of said body portion to the'cap whereby it Will extend Within the head receiving opening thereof, the medial part of said bo'dy portion being cut away to form a pair of oppositely disposed flanges and an adjustable strap extending across the cut away portion of said body and connecting said flanges.
