Description

Patented July 3l, '1928.
UNITED STATES 1,678,967 yMT1-:NT OFFICE.
THOMAS H. WILKINSON, OF ORANFORD, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOB T0 GUSTAV Ha -A FROMMANN, OF CONCORD, NEW YORK. i
DISPLAY DEVICE.
Application led March My invention relates to devices for -displaying merchandise, advertisements and other articles, and the same has for its object more particularly to provide a simple, efficient and reliable device which may be readily produced from a single blank of suitable material, such as card-board or the like, and which may be readily adjusted to position to serve as a support for displaying articles. ofy merchandise or the like upon counters, show-cases or-'in windows.
Further, said invention has for its object to provide a device vof the character specied which in its knocked-down or normal state for shipment may be folded to render the same compact for transportation and storage purposes, in connection with the articles eventually to be displayed thereon, 'and which may be readily folded or' adjustedv to operative position to 'support the articles to be displayed thereon.
Further, said invention has for its object to provide a foldable support consisting of a pair of end members or wings, and intermediate connected members forming a forwardly-extending inclined support to receive and reta-in thereon the article to be displayed.
Further, said invention has for its object to provide a device of the character specified which is partly held in adjusted or operative position by the article supported thereby.
Further, said invention has for its object to provide a device of the character specified which when adjusted to operative position will be firm and rigid and capable of supporting the article. to be displayed thereon in exposed position without danger of becoming overbalanced and tipping over.
Other objects will in part be obvious and in part be pointed out hereinafter.
To the attainment of the aforesaid objects and ends, my invention consists in the novel details of construction and in the combinal l an illustrative embodiment of the invention,
Figure 1 is a face view, with parts eX- tended, showing one form of device constructed according to and embodying my said invention 2, i926. seria1 No. 91,656.
Fig. 2 is a front view of the standl or support as set up;
Fig. 3 is a perspective thereof, illustrating how an article is supported thereby;
Fig. 4 is a top view of Fig.-4 3, and
Fig. 5 is a view similar toFig. 2, showing means for holdingthe wings or lateral Y tions 15 converge downwardly from the intermediate points 17 on the lateral portions 14 to the points 18 near the center line 13,' and then' converge upwardly at right angles to the downwardly converging edge portions to form a projection 19. The lower edge 20 of said blank 10 is preferably straight.
At Figs. 2, 3 and 4, theblank or device 10 is shown adjusted to position to support an article to be displayed which is indic ted at A. As shown the intermediate portions 15 are folded towards each other along the' line 13 to form a forwardly .projecting angular or V-shaped support, indicated at 21, while the llateral portions or wings 14 are folded forwardly along the lines 11' and 12 to form lateral extensions. When the'blank is folded as shown, the lower edge 20 serves to properly support the device upon a flat surface.
The article A is received in the recesses or notches formed in the upper parts of the intermediate portions 15, and the same is retained in position thereon betweeen the projection 19 and the lateral portions or wings 14. With the article supported as illustrated, the center,l of gravity thereof is disposed within the confines of the base 20, so that said device will support the article without danger of toppling over. Further, the article, since theI same bridges or st-raddles the portions 15, serves to prevent said device from spreading yBout laterally. If preferred,` as' shown at Fig. 5, additional means 22, such as a string, rubber, strip of card board, or vthe like may be inserted-in theslots 23 of `the wings 14 to hold the u;
wings together and the device as a whole against spreading apart.
` The article A is carried by the forward portion of the device in exposed position. The device may serve to support packa es of merchandise of variousI characters, isplay cards, other supports, and the like. Advertising matter may be printedqupon the faces of the device if desired.
The devices may be shipped or transported flat, as shown at Fig. 1, or the same may be folded accordion-like along the lines 11, 12 and 13, to dispose the lateral portions 14 one over the other with the portions 15 between vthe same, and thereby providing a very compact article which may be packed with the goods to be displayed, or packed for shipment or storage.

' an article to It is to be noted that while I have shown,
the supporting device constructed to receive and retain an article of rectangular or box-like form, that' the recesses or notches provided in the upper edges of the interme diate portions may be varied to receive and support articles of different shapes or con- I-Iavingthus. described my said invention, to secure by'Letters Patent-is:
1. Adevice of the character described comprising a blank having a straight lower edge oldable along three dened vertical lines to provide outer portions and intermediate portions; said intermediate portions being of reduced height relative to said outer portions and, when said blank is adjusted to operative position, converginv forwardly from said outer portions to orm a V-shaped support having upper edges extending forwardly and downwardly from -intermediate points on said outer portions and providing) recesses adapted to receive e displayed; said outer portions projecting laterally at the rear of said intermediate portions transversely of, said upper edges to form angles with said intermediate portions, substantially as specified.
2. A device of the character ldescribed l comprising a blank having a straight lower .edge foldable along three defined vertical lines to provide outer portions and intermediate portions; 'said intermediate portions being of reduced height relative to Said outer portions and, when said blank is adjusted to operative position, converging forwardly from said outer portions to form a V-shaped support having upper edges eX- tending forwardly and .downwardly from intermediate points on said outer portions and providing recesses adapted to receive an article to be displayed; said outer portions projecting laterally at the rear of said intermediate portions transversely of said upper edges to form angles with said intermediate portions, and means engaging the .upper edges ofd said outer portions adjacent to the inner edges thereof whereby to hold the device to adjusted position with said outer port-ions in spaced-relation to each other, substantially as specied.
3. A device of the character described comprising'a blank having a straight lower edge foldable along three deiined vertical lines to provide outer portions and intermediate portions, said outer portions having recesses in lthe upper portions thereof adjacent to their inner edges; said intermediate portions being of reduced height relative to said outer portions and, `when' said blank is adjusted to operative position,
converging forwardly from said, outer por-` tions to form a V-shaped support having ,upper edges extending forwardly and downwardly from intermediate points on said outer portions and providing recesses adapted to receive an article to be displayed; said
