IMPROVEMENT vIN ROPE HALTERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 166,683, dated August 17, 1875; application filed May 22, 1875.

Be it known that I, LUcrUs G. CHASE, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in Rope Halters, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a rope halter constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2, detail to be referred to.

My present invention relates particularly to certain improvements in what are ordinarily termed five-ring halters,7 which have heretofore been made of leather 5 and this invention consists in a halter made of one continuous piece of rope, so arranged and connected at various points by suitable clamps or fastenings as to resemble the five-ring halter, the nose, cheek, head, front, and gullet portions, chin-strap, and throat-latch being all in one and the same piece with the tie or leading strap, the rope being laid double, so that one portion may be separated from another to form the head and front pieces, the rope also being doubled at the portions of its length where the chin-strap is situated, the doubling of the rope forming aloop at the inner end of each portion of the chin-piece, the two loops being united bypassing the rope through them, and tying it so as to form an eye,7 the position of which corresponds to that of the ring to which the leading or tie strap of the five-ring halter is secured, by which construction I am enabled to make a strong and durable substitute therefor in a ready and convenient manner, and at a triflin g cost. My said rope halter is instantly adjusted and secured on the horses head by simply catching a hook or cross-bar (at the junction of the upper end of one of the cheek-pieces with the lower end of the corresponding side of the head-piece) into a loop formed at the lower end ofthe same side of the head-piece.

To enable others skilled in the art to understand and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the manner in which I have carried it out.

In the said drawings is represented my improved halter, of one continuous piece of rope, so arranged or doubled and connected at various points by clamps or fastenings A as to form the nose-piece a, cheek-pieces b b, headpiece o, front piece d, gullet-piece c, chin-strap l1., and throat-latch t', in one and the same piece with the leading or tie strap k, the end of which forms one extremity of the rope, the other extremity of which is situated at the junction of the two portions of the throat-latch t' with the gulletpiece e, and is spliced to the rope at this point.

rIhe clamps I employ for uniting any two portions of the rope together at the desired points are of two pieces of metal-one, l, provided with two circular holes7 5, one at each end, andthe other piece, m, provided with two projections, 6, one at each end, to iit therein, the pieces l m being placed on opposite sides ofthe portions of the rope to be united, the ends of the projections 6, after entering the holes 5, beingV flattened down or spread out so as to form rivets, whereby the two portions of the rope are securely confined within the clamp, as desired. n. is a hook of the form seen in Fig. 2, being composed of a shank, 7, a cross-bar, 8, and a transverse piece, 9, at its lower end, which is bent around and closed down upon the outside of the l0op\p, formed at the junction of the upper end of one of the cheek-pieces b with the front of one portion of the throat-latch z', the hook being secured in this position by a rivet, r, passing into the transverse piece 9. The cross-bar 8 of the hook n is passed into a loop, s, formed at the lower end of the corresponding side of the head-piece, and is brought to a bearing at the bottom of this loop, thus holding the parts together as desired.

Just above the loop 8 I form another loop, 10, by clamping or connecting the two portions of the rope together at a little'distance from each other, so that should the halter fit loosely on the head of the horse, the length of the head and cheek pieces maybe reduced by inserting the cross-bar 8 ofthe hook u into the upper loop l0.

From the foregoing it will be seen that I am enabled to provide an adjustable rope halter as a substitute for an ordinary five-rin g halter, having all the parts in common there- With,and possessing allofitsadvantageg be- 2.
