IMPROVEMENT IN BRUSHES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 166,607, dated August 10, 1875; application filed May 21, 1874.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, M. E. HAWKINS, of Lansingburg, in the county of Rensselaer and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Whitewash and other similar Brushes, of which the fol-' lowing is a specification This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in the construction of whitewash and other similar fiat brushes 5 and it consists of a V-shaped stock or head piece of malleable cast-iron formed with an enlarged opening at the angle of the jaws, in which is suspended a rod or bar running parallel with said jaws, and adapted to hold the bristles, hair, or body of the brush when the jaws are clamped together, without clamping-screws or other fastening devices, as will be fully hereinafter set forth and described.

In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a front view of a brush constructed according to my invention Fig. 2, a transverse section of the head or stock, ready for the wire and bristles or hair; Fig. 3, a similar view, showing the jaws clamped together upon the body or bristles Fig. 4., a transverse sectional view, showing the binding-wire in place, and Fig. 5 an end view of the brush complete.

The letter A represents the body of the brush, which may consist of bristles, hair, or other suitable material, and B the head or stock with V-shaped jaws, having an enlarged opening at the angle, as shown. Said stock or head-piece is constructed of malleable castiron, in one piece, with the socket or ferrule 0 complete, and with the jaws apart, as shown in Fig. 2, for the reception of the bindingwire and bristles. D represents the binding wire or rod suspended in the enlarged portion of the stock or head, at the angle formed by the jaws, for the purpose of holding the bristles or hair forming the body of the brush in place when the jaws are clamped together.

In constructing the brush the hair, bristles,

or other material forming the body are placed around the rod or wire D, by folding the same midway between the ends, and placing the edge thus formed between the jaws, the wire resting in the enlarged opening at the angle of the same. The jaws are then clamped together by hammering, or by pressure applied by means of suitable dies or special machinery adapted to the purpose. The wire or rod D and the clamping-jaws of the stock or head are made somewhat longer than the width of the. body A, the ends of the wire projecting from the same at the sides, the jaws at each end of the stock or head being pressed down so as to meet under the projecting ends of the wire or rod, and effectually secure the same in position.

What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The brush-head, formed as described, of malleable cast-iron, with V-shaped jaws with an enlarged opening at the angle, in combination with a binding-wire D, for holding the body of the brush in place without screws or other fastening devices, substantially as herein described and set forth.
