Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN C. MORGEL, ALONZO THOMAS BALL, AND HENRY M. NAGEL, OF BRAZIL, INDIANA.
BROOM OR BRUSH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 513,024, dated January 16, 1894.
Application filed August 31, 1893. Serial No. 484,490. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN C. MORGEL, ALONZO THOMAS BALL, andHENRY M. NAGEL, citizens of the United States, and residents of Brazil, in the county of Clay and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brooms or Brushes; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a face view of. the invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of same and Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of one part of the clasp.
This invention has relation to certain new and useful improvements in brooms and brushes, the object being to provide simple and efiective means for holding together and in place the straw, bristles, hair, or other materials from which brooms and brushes are usually made; and the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts all as hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, illustrating the invention, the letter A designates a holder or clasp for the splints or bristles B. Said holder or clasp is preferably made of sheet metal having a. hollow interior which corresponds in form to the upper portion of the brush or broom. One side portion a is hinged or pivoted at its upper edge portion b to the main or body portion. At the lower edge of said portion a,0n itsinner face is a series of teeth or corrugations c, the inner face of the corresponding portion of the body of the clasp or holder having similar teeth or corrugations. The splints, bristles or other material is inserted into the clasp or holder until it is filled, when the hinged portion a is brought down to its place, clamping or binding the splintsor bristles together, the
teeth or corrugations c aiding in retaining them securely in place. The portion a is preferably made with side flanges a which tit inside the end portions of the main or body portion. Said hinged portion is shown as held in clamping position by means of screws or bolts h which extend through perforations h near the lower edges of the parts a, a.
At the upper edge portion of the part a, on the inner face, are one or more hooks i ar' ranged to engage perforations in the adjoining portion of the part A, when the part a is in clamping position, and prevent spreading or bulging.
The upper portion of the clasp or holder is extended upwardly in gradually reducing form to form a socket j to receive a handle J.
To prevent the splints or bristles from spreading, a wire K may be passed around them a short distance below the clasp or holder.
Brushes and brooms of various sizes and styles may be made with the aid of holding or clamping devices such as described.
When the bristles or splints become worn, the portion a may be readily released from its clamping position, turned back, and new material inserted.
Having thus described ourinvention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The holder or clasp A, having the hinged portion a, the hinge rod, the teeth or corrugations c, the clamping screws or bolts h, and the two hooks t' secured to the inner face of the part a and engaging at their extremities perforations in the adjoining portion of the part A, substantially as specified.
In testimonywhereof We affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN C. MORGEL. ALONZO THOMAS BALL. HENRY M. NAGEL.
Witnesses:
J. H. WELLs, W. R. BOUGHTON.
