Description

UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
WILLIAM SPALDING, OF PETERSBURG, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN HOOP-FASTENINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 166,564, dated August 10, 1875 application filed May 15, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM SPALDING, of Petersburg, Monroe county, Michigan, have invented a new and Improved Hoop-Fastening, of which the following is a specification:
The object of this invention is to furnish simple, cheap, and convenient means for fastenin g the ends of hoops in manufacturing thesame; and it consists of a triangular'plateclip, which covers the outer end of the hoop, having points or prongs thereon, which are passed through the hoop and clinched on the inside.
Figure]. is a side View of the hoop, showing the plate-clip applied. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of Fig. 1, taken on the line as m; and Fig.
nearly so, in the ordinary manner, which allows my metallic clip to be reduced in size and made available. The plate B is triangular in form, or nearly so, and at each angle or corner is a prong, E. These prongs are made tapering from the plate to the point, and, by means of an awl or suitable tool, are passed through the hoop and clinched on the inside, as seen in Fig.2, thus fastening the end tightly and securely to the hoop, as seen in Fig. l.
The plate B may be held to the end of the hoop by a nail, F,"if desired, but the nail is not an essential feature.
It will be noticed that this fastening passes entirely over the end of the hoop,,thus rendering it impossible to catch or get loose.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent As a new article of manufacture, the plateclip B, of a triangular shape, and having prongs E at its corners, as and for the purpose specified.
