IMPROVEMENT IN BUTTER-PACKAGES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No.l66.,310, dated August 3, 1875 application filed. June 12, 1875.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, UEVEDRA B. SHELDON, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new, and Improved Butter- Package, of which the following is a specification:
My invention consists of a wide hoop-shaped jacket of wood or other non-conducting material, pressed on the tapering metal body of the package, both for re-enforcin g it as to strength, so that light thin metalmay be used, and for protecting the metal from the rays of the sun while the packages are in transportation.
The bottom is made of stamped sheet metal of sufficient thickness to afl'ord the requisite strength, and it has a flange turned up outside of the lower end of the body, serving for a strengthening-band to the thin substance of the body, also for soldering to the body.
Figure 1 is partly a side elevation and partly a sectional elevation of my improved butterpackage, and Fig. 2 is a top view.

A is the body, of light thin metahtapering from the top downward, and at the lower end fitting inside ofthe flange B of the stamped metal bottom 0. D is the wood cover. It is rabbeted in the edge to shut down in the body and make a tight joint, and the top projects even with the flange or bead E, formed in the top of the body for strengthening it. F represents the fastening-clips to fasten the cover on the body, the same being angle-bars to lie in the top and hang down the edges, the overhanging part having a flange, G, to clip under thev bead E, and hold the cover firmly to it when the part lying on the top is fastened by nails H. These clips are so shaped that while they fasten the cover firmly they can be taken off in the most ready manner by raising the inner end with the claw of a hammer or other prying-tool. H is the re-enforcing and protecting jacket of wood which I apply to, the body A, the same being a thin veneer of strong straight-grained wood bent into the form of a hoop, and fastened at the ends and driven on, so as to hold tight by friction 5 or it may be fastened in any way preferred. It
may be suflicientlyfastened by springing over the flange B.
This kind of strengthening and protecting jacket may be applied cheaply, and, together with a thin, light, and cheap body A and Wood cover, will make a cheap package that may be sold to the consumer at a small price to save the trouble and cost of return packages.
Having thus described my invention, lclaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination of removable protecting-jacket H and metallic body A, diminishing from top to bottom, and secured together by forcing the wooden jacket over the 'metallic lining, all substantially as described.
2. In a butter-package, the combination of thin metallic body A, re-enforoing jacket H, and the heavy stamped metallic bottom having flange B, the wooden jacket being chamfered on its lower. and inner edge, and sprung over the flange, as set forth.
