UNITED STATES JOSEPH V. VAUGHN, OF' DE nLAND, FLORIDA.
Application filed June 1, 1925, Serial No. 34,188. Renewed February 14,1928.
This invention relates to improvements in toilet articles and has particular' reference to combs.
An important object of the invent-ion is to provide a comb designed especially for use to straighten hair.
A further object ot the invention is the provision ot' a comb ot this character which is so constructed as to be readily manipulated.
A still further object ot' the invention is the provision of aV comb ot' theA above character which is comparatively simple yet very durable in construct-ion and eilicient tor the purpose intended.
Other objects and advann ot this invention will become apparent as the description progresses.
ln the accompanying drawing forming a part of this speciiication and in which like munerals are employed to designate corresponding' parts throughout the same:
Figure l is a side elevation of a comb constructed in accordance with my invention,
Fihure 2 is a top plan view ot a portion oi" the same, and
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view talren on the line 3--3 of Figure l.
In the drawing, wherein for the purpose o illust 'ation is shown the preferred embodiment ot my invention, the numeal 5 generally indicates the lhead of the comb which is preferably of cylindrical form and of any suitable material. Formed on one end of the` head 5 and extending in alignment therewith is a handle shank 6 providedv adjacent its outer end, with a shoulder' 7,
wire S being; wound about the shank between the said shoulder and the inner end of the shank to permit convenient gripping of the handle thus formed.
Formed in ar longitudinalseries on one side oit the body 5 and extending radially therefrom are relatively coarse teeth4 9. A similar series oi? relatively fine teeth l0 is formed upon the opposite side of the head ot the comb. With reference toFigure 3, it is seen that the teeth 9 and l0 lie ina common plane intersecting the axis of the head 5.
In use, the comb. is primarily intended for straightening the hair so as to remove curls and kinks, being preferably used by ya longitudinal series ot relf first e11a'aninf y the coarse teeth 9 with the hair and then imparting slight rotary move ment to the comb so that the hair will be trained over the side of the head 5 and be engaged by the ineteeth. In this manner the comb may be employed to straighten the hair and will obviate the useV of pulling irons or' similar apparatus which are eX- tremely inconvenient and uncomfortable to the person. lt will be evident by reference to Figures 2 and 3 of' the drawings, and particularly the latter ligure, that the head 5 of the comb is of a` diameter considerably `greater than the thickness of the teeth 9 and l0, that, as the teeth ot the two series occupy a common plane intersecting the axis ot 'the `ead, the opposite sides otn the Yheiulwill )reject or extend a considerable .ce at opposite sides of this plane and ruently when the Acomb is drawn hrough the hair in the manner illustrated in Figure 3, the hair will be straightened dueto the passage of the convex surface et the head 5 of the comb thereover, the cniment ot the hairs between the teeth of '1 series servingl to sutliciently tension the hairs to bring about this desirable result.
it is to be understood that the :form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as the preferred example et the same and that various changes to the shape, size and arrangement ot' parts may he resorted to without departingj from the spirit ot the invention, or the scope of the subjioincd claim.
Havingv thus described my invention, I claim:
it comb for the purpose stated comprising a head of substantially cylindrical contour, .tively coarse teeth vprojecting radially from one side thereof, and a longitudinal series of relatively fine teeth projecting radially from the` opposite side thereof, the teeth ot the two series occupying a common plane, the oppoe site sides of' the head between the series oit teeth projecting beyond said plane to provide a curvilinear surface to be presented to hairs engaged and tensioned by the series of teeth.
In testimony whereof I ailiX my signature.
JOSEPH V. VAUGHN.
