- The wrappin of certain round-or flat articles ofannu ar shape (pneumatic tyres, strip, iron wire, etc.) is generally effected by hand, and consists in winding a protecting band all round the article.
A machine for performingthis work is, however, known, in which a vertical" shuttle encircling, at right angles, the article to be wrapped,'carries a spool of paperor other material and receives a movement of'rotation about its centre while the article also turns. I
In this machine, it is necessary to modify the position of the members actuating and supporting the article in accordance with the dimensions of this latter, which always turns with the same peripheral" velocity. The result is either a wasteful consumption of. wrapping material on articles of large dimensions, or insufiicient wrapping on small articles. Further, the position of the article to be wrapped does not provide the conditions necessary for good mechanical work, its plane of rotation being rarely at right angles to that of the shuttle; and the centering of the article is doubtful.
The object of the present invention isto remedy these inconveniences, object whilst retaining the relative rightangle position of the planes of rotation of the shuttle and of the ring to be wrappedthe plane of the ring is no longer vertical, but horizontal; and, in order to obtain a peripheral velocity proportional to the diameter of the ring, the latter rests on radial actuating rollers which, at the same time, ensure accurate centering. A feature of the invention is that the shuttle is open for the passage of the ring to be wrapped, being actuated by pinion gearing arranged in such manner that there is always at least oiie of its members in en'- gagementwith the rackwork of the shuttle passes said members.

As can be seen from the drawing, the machine consists of a frame 1 whereon is mounted a substantially circular channel 2 that is cut across to form a gapat 3,. and 7 also has part of its periphery cutaway at 4 (Fig. 4). Inthis channel a shuttle 5 is guided for rotation, on the "one hand, by
rollers 6 having their axes of rotation disposed within the channel 2 and, on the other hand, by the lateral cheeks 7, 8 of said channel. The cheek 7 is solid and carries a frame 9 supporting gear wheels 10, 11, 12, one of which, 10, is the driving pinion. The intermediate pinion 11 simply transmits the movement of'the wheel10 to the wheel 12. The shafts 13, 14 of these two wheels, which are equldistant from the centre of the shuttle 5, carry pinions 15, 16 of thesame diameter that turn in the same direction and at'the same peripheral velocity, owing to the intermediate pinion- 11. Said pinions 15, 16 gear with the external toothed crown 17 of the shuttle 5. The linear distance separating the shafts 13 and 14 is such that when the gap 3 of the shuttle passes by the pinions 15,, 16 one at least of these will always be in gear with the rackw'ork 17 This arrangement dispenses with any means for closing the gap 3 or 3 through'which the 'article'18 to be wrapped is inserted.
The driving pinion 10 may be operated by any means such as, for example, the pulley 19 mounted on its shaft 13, over which pulley is passed a belt 20 that transmits motion from the main shaft '21 fitted with fast and'loose pulleys 22 and 23, said belt being guided by pulleys 24 mounted on the frame 1 and on the cheek 7. The arrows 25 indicate the path ofthe'belt'20.
.The check 8' of the channel 2 is provided with a circular groove 26 for the passage of the shafts 27 of the wrapping spools 28, which are fixed on the shuttle 5. The wrappingstrip 29 of paper or other material passes between twin guides 30 (Figs. 7 and 8) and then over a roller 31, with tension spring 32, before being wrapped round the article 18. A tension device of anykind may be applied to the spool 28 to prevent accidental unwinding of the strip 29, which is thus kept in tension all the time.

Tlie article 18 to be wrapped is arranged horizontally on radial conical rollers 33, 34, 35, 36 the shafts of which turn in bearings provided in supports on the frame 1. These rollers, turn in the same direction 7 and at the same velocity, and their upper edges are horizontal. They accordingly centre the article 18, which is laid upon them, automatically, and cause it to turn at a peripheral velocity proportional to its diameter. Motion istransmitted to the rollers 33, 34, 35 36 by the driving shaft 21 through sets of gear wheels 38, 39 andAO, 41 guides 42, wheels 43 mountedon the shafts of rollers, and a separate belt for each roller to enable them to turntin the same direction. The mechanism comprising the rollers and their transmission devices is enclosed in a ear case 44, the top wall of which is provided wlth radial openings 45 through which the rollers project, and with an opening for the passage of the shuttle. It also has suitable stops for retaining the article 18 at the 1 beginning of the wrapping operation I Reference 46 denotes a toothed rack which, in "combination with a pinion 47 on a fiywheel 48,;having a crank49, enables the pinions 10, 11, 12 that actuate the shuttle to be thrown out of action as when the shuttle is to be brought into position to facilitatethe passage of the article to be wrapped through the gap therein.
