Abstract

1378629 Toroidal coil winding machine TOKO Inc 7 Feb 1973 [8 Feb 1972] 6107/73 Heading B3E A machine for helically winding a wire 9, Fig. 1, on a toroidal core 8 comprises means 2 for supporting the core, a C-shaped ring 1 rotatably mounted to pass through the core, means for retaining the leading end of a wire threaded through a hole 11, Fig. 6a, in the ring, means 4 for retarding the trailing portion of the wire, and means for rotating the core and ring in synchronism with each other. The C-shaped ring is supported by a C-shaped ring holder 2 formed with an annular track (2<SP>1</SP>), Fig. 5 (not shown), for guiding the ring 1, and a track (2<SP>11</SP>) for allowing the wire 9 to pass freely therethrough. The hole 1<SP>1</SP> in the ring has a smooth rectangular or elliptical contour. One or more openings 4<SP>1</SP> are provided for a brake 4, and notches 3<SP>11</SP> are provided for the mounting of driving rollers 3 and a corresponding number of holding rollers 3<SP>1</SP> for rotating the ring about the track 2<SP>1</SP>. A motor 14 drives the ring via a belt 17 engaging pulleys 15, 16 and a bevel gear 18 meshing with a plurality of bevel gears having shafts secured to each roller 3. The brake 4 is made of a hard synthetic rubber and is biased towards the outer periphery of ring 1 by a leaf spring 6 attached to a brake lever 5. When the wire 9 runs into the space between brake 4 and ring 1, the thickness of the wire lifts the brake but the pressure from leaf spring 6 causes frictional forces between the ring and wire, and wire and brake, the latter causing a tensioning of the wire 9 which may be of copper coated with a polyurethane resin. A clamp 10 is provided for the wire during the winding operation. The core 8 is rotated using a drive roller 11 driven by prime mover 12 and worm-wheel 13, and idler rolls (11<SP>1</SP>), Fig. 8 (not shown). In operation, wire 9 is passed through the hole 1<SP>1</SP> in the ring 1, the other end of the wire being retained in clamp 10, and the ring is rotated anti-clockwise. When the hole 1<SP>1</SP> has passed a point (B), Fig. 6c (not shown), diametrically opposite the core 8 the brake is applied to tension the wire as the hole approaches the core at the end of a single winding operation. The winding machine may be provided with a suitable reduction gearing mechanism, woundturn detecting mechanism and automatic stop mechanism to allow two or three machines to be simultaneously operated.
