Description

Jan. 24, 1928.
M. M. BEAR CLASP Filed April 20. 1927 .Patented dan. 24, i938.
lilillhll il CLASE.
Application filed April 2G, 1927. Serial No. 185,25S.
'llie present invention relates to improven'ients in clasps and has kifor an chieot t0 provide etiective and ornamental `clasp i'or use in connection with garters, Vfor holding neel-:ties and numerous other uses.
Another object oit the inve jion resides in providing a clasp or a construction and iiforni Weich `will admit of its readily acquiring a inono rain or other ornainei'itationand la in which tne desirable resiliency will not sacriliced in any Way. y
lt is a 'further ohject oil the invention to provide a clasp or neat appearance, siinple and inexpensive construction and one in is which the parts may he readily separated and asseinhled.
lilith the foregoing `l other objects in view, the invention Win he more 'fully de scribed hereinafter, and Will he more par- ;:1 ticularly pointed ont in the claims appended hereto one of which is g re is a iront elevation, partly broken away, Lthe iinproved clasp on an :in enlarged scale. i
Figure 3 is an edge View of the saine in the closed position.
Figure e: is a rear elevation. Figur-e 5 is a longitudinal section taken 35 on the line 5-5 in Figure 4, and
Figure 6 is a perspective view of the locking lever.
Referring more particularly to the draW- ings 7 designates an inelastic hand portion .la ol a garter to one end oi which is attached the elastic webbing 8 having the length ad- `justing device 9 and the attaching loop l0; and to the other end oi such inelastic band 7 is the tongue ll adapted to underlie the attaching loop l and the attaching wedge or head l2.
The inelastic band 7 is adapted to carry one or more, preferably two pendant pads 13 and lll preferably disposed at opposite o sides of the leg for holding the tivo clasp nieni'oers shown.
rlhe improved clasp consists ol a substantially U-shaped traine composed ol the rear l5, the iront leg lll and the connectingvoire or loop 1T. rlhe traine is preferably ol steel or soine other inaterial possessing ser inherent resiliency and the legs l5 and li' are spaced apart. A t the free end portion ot' the leg l5 is a transverse groove i8' adapted to receive the teeth if) of the clau' Qt) which 60 lies at substantially right angles to lthe operating plate 2l, which togetherwvith the claw constitutes the locking lever. The claw is provided with the laterally projecting trunnions or pivot pins 22 and 23 for iitting 65 Within the semi-circular hearings 2e and 25 near the free edge of the front leg' 16 of the traine. These hearings 2e and 25 open inwardly and the trunnions are retained yieldahly in place by the spring plate 25 which 70 is riveted or Yotherwise secured to the inner tace of the iront legs 16, as Jfor instance shown at The rivet may he a square one in order to prevent a rocking inoveinent olf 'the spring plate 'lhe spring plate is provided with a cut out portion 2S in registry with a similar cut ont portion Q9 in the iront leg 'lo `of the traine. These cut out portions are in alinel nient with the clan* ill) and through these cut out portions the claw is arrijgnged to extend over and engage the inner tace oi"- the rear leg l5. lhe clawy 2() will he oil' such size as to resiliently' the rear leg` l5 whereby to pry the legs apart as the S5 clan* is being :forced to the right angular position across the legs, as shown in Figure.
3. ln its linal position, as shown in this ligure, the teeth 19 ol the claw have snapped into the locking groove 18, and the inherou ent resiliency ci the iframe holds the claw yieldaloly in place with the operating plate 2l close against the outside tace of the liront leg 16.
This plate 2l may be produced in any 95 ornamental shape or forni, and it may be produced in any desired color or it may he gold or silver plated or oxidized. lt is suitt-ahle for hearing a monogram either upright or sidewise or any desired design may be reproduced thereon.
The yoke or loop portion 17 of the frame is adapted to receive the ring SO held loy the stitching 3l to the garter pad 13. As shown hy the broken away clasp in Figure l, the rear leg l5 inay also he provided with openings or eyes to receive stitching ior attaching the clasp to the extended portion ot the pad. i
The locking lever inay he removed by simply turning the saine at right angles to the plane of the operating plate 2l when the plate is substantially in the open poeitioin as shovvn in full lines in Figure This movement will automatically pry the rounded trunnions 22 and 23 out of the semi-circular bearings 2li and 25, forcing the spring plate 26 inwardly. y
The slots 28 and 29 will be elongated to permit of the trunnions and claw being slipped outwardly therethrough. This ia- V= cilitates assembly and allows substitution of parts when Wear occurs or when the monogram is to be. changed.4 f
Although the improved clasp `has been described in connection with a garter it will be understood that it may have many` other uses. y
The plate 21 or other parte of the device may be made ol solid gold, sterling silver, steel, brass, plated goldor silver or may be oxidized or produced from any other desired material. y i
` The teeth of the lever may pre-iferably be dipped in Celluloid, frutta perciia or Sonie rubstricted only by the scope of the following `lllhaf; is claimed is l. .An improved clasp comprising a shaped resilient metallic frame having `:iront and rear spaced parallel legs, pressed out half hearings in the front leg having open inner sides, a locking lever having an operating plaie and a claw extending angularly to the plate and provided with trunnions adapted to be received in the hall bearings from the inner side ol the iront leg, said clan7 adapted to engage the rear leg and spring thee-ame under tension away from the .iront leg, and a spring plate secured to the inner side oi the l'rontlegl and having portions engaging over lhe open sides ol the haiic bearings to coniini` the trunnions yieldably therein, said spring plate and iront leg both having elongated and wide registering openings therein iior receiving the claw and trunnions therethrough 'from the outer side oi the front Wall.
f2. An improved clasp comprising a U- shaped resilient metallic frame having liront and rear spaced parallel lege, pressed out half hearings in the i'ront legr having open inner sid-es, a. locking lever having an operating plate and a` claw extending angularly io the plate and provided with trunnions adapted to be received xin thehalf bearings i1-oni the inner side oi' the iront leg, said `claw adapted to engage `the rear leg and spring the saine under tension away from the troni: leg, and a spring plaie secured to the inner side of AEhe :iront leg and having portions engaging over the open sides of the halli bearings to confine the trunnions yield- -al'ily therein; means for atlachingsaid spring `plate lo the :l'ront leg remote 'troni said half hearingm Said spring plaie and :liront: leg' having registering openings oil substantial length and Width to receive therethrough the claw and trunnions when turned sidewise, whereby to permit of detachable attachment oi the claws and levers.
