UNITED STATES GEORGE S HE NRITZY, OF HAZLETON, PENNSYLVANIA.
HINGE.
Application filed June 27, 1922. Serial No. 571,194.
This invention relates to awning frame hinges and particularly to that type which enables the sides of the awning frame to be folded fiat on the front or main portion of the awning.
The primary object of my invention is the provision of an improved hinge for awning frames which will permit of the folding of the sides the frame in parallel relation to the front or main portion of the frame.
Another object of my invention is the provision of a hinge for an awning frame which when installed in a fold of the flexible body portion will not catch, tear or cut the flexible body portion when the bending at the hinges takes place and will at all times, whether bent or straight, present smooth surfaces to the flexible body portion.
Referring to the drawing where preferred embodiments of my invention are illusl' 'ated,
Figure 1 illustrates an awning with my improved hinge installed therein, a portion being broken away to show its application.
Figure 2 is a view similar to Figure 1 but showing the awning folded.
Figure 3 illustrates a plan view of one of my improved hinges when in open position.
Figure 4 is a view similar to Figure 3 but showing the hinge in closed position.
Figure 5 illustrates a cross section on the line 55 of Figure 3.
Figure 6 illustrates a modified form of my invention.
Figure 7 illustrates a further modification of my improved hinge.
Figure 8 is a cross section taken on the line 8-8 of Fig.6.
Like reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
10 designates a window to which the awning frame may be fastened, 11 the roller upon which the awning may be rolled. The awning body 12 is attached to the awning frame 13 with a fold l t at its lower edge which encloses the frame.
The hinges which secure the parts of the frame together are of the rule joint type. A hinge member is here shown as provided with a right angular portion bearing a threaded end 21 and two jaws 22 which receive the tongue 23 of the other hinge portion 24. A threaded end is provided on the end of the hinge portion 24. The members 20 and 24 are provided with shoulders 26, 27, respectively, and complementary to each other. When the hinge is open as shown in Fig. 3, the axes of the portions 21 and 25 being at about 87, the shoulders 26, 27 are in contact. When the hinge is closed as shown in Fig. 4, the shoulders are out of contact. The edges of the pairs 22 are chamfered as shown in Fig. 8, so that when the hinge is closed as in Fig. i, there will be no sharp edges to contact with the body portion of the awning. A pin 28 hinges the parts 20, 2a together.
In Figure 6, the hinge members 20, 24 have internally threaded portions 21, 25', respectively. The parts 22, 23, 26, 27', 28 correspond, respectively, with the parts 23, 26, 27, 28 of Figs. 8 and 4.
In Figure 7, I have illustrated the hinge members 20, 24: held together with the pin 28".
My invention is particularly adapted for use with rods and pipes or tubes, thereby making the use of tools, other than ordinary pipe tools, unnecessary.
This inventon although described in connection with an awning is equally adapted.
for use in ventilators, folding beds and other similar places where folding frames are used.
While I have described embodiments of my invention in detail, I desire to have it understood that I do not limit myself to the exact structure shown and that modifications and changes may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention and within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described my invention, what I claim is A hinge comprising a body member having two jaws and being of substantially circular cross. section, another body member havinga tongue and of similar cross section, the tongue being pivoted between the jaws, means at the end of the body members for attachment to a pipe or rod, one of the body members having a substantially right angular turn therein, the outer portion of the aws conforming substantially to the contours of the body portions and presenting curved surfaces in all positions.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature.
GEORGE S. HENRITZY.
