This invention relates to window screens and has relation more particularly to the structure of a stile for use in the production of a screen frame, and it is an object of the invention to provide a stile formed of one piece of material and which includes a lock seam assuring a rigid structure of the stile and whereby is eliminated the use of solder or welding.
It is also an object of the invention to pro- Vide a stile for a screen frame constructed in a manner whereby the stile is effectively braced or reinforced against twisting action.
A still further object ofthe invention is to provide a stile of this kind which is in the general form of a tube and which is produced from a single sheet of material through the medium of a lock seam, said seam being of a character which is locked in four directions and which seam produces the same efiect as if the stile was a seamless tube.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved window screen whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to theaccompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a fragmentary view in perspective illustrating a stile or section for a screen frame constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention;
Figure 2 is a fragmentary view in perspective illustrating a further embodiment of my invention.
In the embodiment of the invention as particularly illustrated in Figure 1, S denotes a stile or section comprised in the structure of a window screen or the like and with which is adapted to co-operate a cover strip C and between which is adapted to be effectively clamped or held an edge or marginal portion of a screen fabric F.
The stile or section S is formed from one sheet of metal of desired thickness and the resultant tubular structure is maintained in desired assembly without soldering or welding but through the instrumentality of a seam L which is locked in four directions forming a Very rigid joint and producing the same effect as if the stile or section S was a seamless tube. The sheet of material from which the stile or section' S is produced is formed to provide a base plate or strip 1 having its longitudinal margin defined by the perpendicularly related flanges 2 both disposed in the same direction with respect to the base strip or plate 1. The outer margins of the flanges 2 are continued by the reverted flanges 3 in close contact with the inner faces of the flanges 2 but terminating at points spaced from the base strip or plate 1. The inner marginal portions of the reverted flanges 3 are continued by the brace plates 4: converging in the same general direction in which is disposed the flanges 2 and having their outer portions meeting along lines substantially coplanar with the transverse center of the plate 1 and inwardly of the outer margins of the flanges 2. i
' The meeting portions of these brace plates are connected by the lock seam L hereinbefore referred to. The outer portions of the flanges 2 and 3 are folded inwardly with respect to the base strip or plate 1 on a desired angle to provide ledges or inturned edges 5 with which engage the locking flanges 6 disposed along the longitudinal margins of the cover strip or plate C.
A marginal portion of the screen fabric F is placed between an adjacent edge or ledge 5 of the stile or section S and a flange 6 of the cover strip or plate C whereby the fabric F is effectively held to the stile. It has also been found that during the period the cover strip or plate C is being assembled or forced into proper engagement with the stile or section S, there will be a tendency to stretch and straighten out the fabric F.
The brace plates 4 provide effective means to strengthen or reinforce the section or stile S against twisting or warping and it is to be especially noted that the section or stile S is completed without requiring soldering or welding. It has been found in actual practice that the stile or section including the lock seam L can be readily and conveniently completed by machinery with a material saving.
The lock seam is produced by having the meeting ends of the plates 4 continued by the plate extensions 7 and '7 in close contact one with the other with the plate extension 7 of a length greater than that of the extension 7. The contacting plate extensions 7 and 7 in completing the seam are first flexed along the line a to provide the portion m substan-' tially at right angles to the inner portions 3/ of said plate extensions and 7. These extensions are then flexed along the line b to provide the inwardly disposed portions 2 substantially at right angles to the portion w or in parallelism with the portions 7 The outer portion of the extension 7 is then reverted, as at 8, to tightly engage between the portions :12 and a of the inner plate extension 7.
As before stated, the stile or section S including the steam L are produced by machinery and the seam when completed, and which is believed to be clearly apparent from the drawings, is locked in four directions, thus assuring a very rigid joint producing the same effect as if the stile or section was a seamless tube. In the embodiment of my invention as illustrated in Figure 2,1 illustrate a stile or frame section formed from a single sheet of metal and also of tubular construction and which is maintained in desired assembly without the use of solder or welding but through the instrumentality of a lock seam L similar to the lock seam L hereinbefore referred to. In this embodiment of my invention this seam L, however, extends beyond preferably the inner edge face of the stile or section adjacent to a side face thereof and. which side face 9 closely adjacent to the seam L is formed to provide a groove or channel 10 to receive a holding or retaining member for the marginal portion of a screen fabric. As this lock seam L is constructed in the same manner as the lock seam L hereinbefore referred to, it is not believed necessary that a detailed explanation thereof be given.
From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a window screen constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim 1. A stile of the class described comprising a base of channel formation and brace plates formed with and bridging thespace between the side members of the channel base.
2. A stile of the class described comprising a base of channel formation, brace plates formed with and bridging the space between the side members of the channel base, said channel base and brace plates being formed from a single sheet of material, and a lock seam connecting the adjacent marginal portions of the brace plates.
3. A stile of the class described comprising a base of channel formation, brace plates formed with and bridging the space between the side members of the channel base, said channel base and brace plates being formed from asingle sheet of material, and a lock seam connecting the adjacent marginal portions of the brace plates, said seam locking in four directions.
4. Astile of the class described formed from a single sheet of material and comprising a base strip having flanges disposed in the same general direction, said flanges being continued by reverted flanges,'said reverted flanges being continued by brace plates disposed one toward the other, said brace plates having extension plates in interlocking engagement one with the other.
5. A stile of the class described formed from a single sheet of material and comprising a base strip having flanges disposed in the same general direction, saidflanges being continuedby reverted flanges, said reverted flanges being continued by brace plates disposed one toward the other, said brace plates having extension plates in interlocking engagement one with the other, the brace plates converging in a direction away from the base strip.
6. A stile of the class described formed from a single'sheet of material and comprising a base strip having flanges disposed in the same general direction, said flanges being continued by reverted flanges, said reverted flanges being continued by brace plates disposed one toward the other, said brace plates having extension plates in interlocking engagement one with the other, said reverted flanges terminating at points spaced from the base strip.
7. A stile of theclass described formed from a single sheet of material and comprising a base strip having flanges disposed in the same general direction, 'said flanges being continued by reverted flanges, said reverted flanges being continued by brace plates disposed one toward the other, said brace plates having extension plates in interlocking engagement one with the other, said flanges having their outer portions inward- 1y disposed to provide ledges.
8. stile of the class described comprising a sheet of material formed to provlde a 5 hollow structure, marginal portions of said sheet having portions interlocking to provide a seam locking in four directions, adjacent portions of the sheet being in contact.
9. A stile of the class described comprising a sheet of material formed to provide a hollow structure, adjacent marginal portions of the sheet being provided with extension plates in contact one with the other, said contacting plates being folded into interlocking relation and to provide a seam locking in four directions.
10. A stile of the class described comprising a sheet of material formed to provide a hollow structure, adjacent marginal portions of the sheet being provided with extension plates in Contact one with the other, said contacting plates being folded into interlocking relation and to provide a seam locking in four directions, one of said plates being longer than the other, the extended portion of the longer plate interlocking with the folded contacting portions of both of the plates.
