CHARLES A. BISBEE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
DEVICE FOR FORMING AND RETAINING PLAITS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. as, 1915.
Application filed March 25, 1914. Serial No. 827,104.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES A. Brsnnn, a
citizen of the United States, and a residentof the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Device for Forming and Retaining Plaits, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a device designed for use in forming and retaining plaits in fabric being designed for use especially in dress-making and draping.
T he object of my invention is the production of a device as mentioned which will be of "simple construction and through the medium of which plaits in fabric may be readily and expeditiously formed or through the medium of which a plait may be positively retained in the fabric in which the same is formed. Other objects will appear hereinafter.
i Vith these: objects in view my invention consists in'the combination and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
T he invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a device embodying my invention, the same being shown in connection with a drapery which is illustrated in dotted lines, Fig. 2 is a section taken on linear-fir of Fig. 1,thedrapery in this figure being shown in full lines,'and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a slightly deiferent form of the device.
The preferred form of construction as illustrated in the drawing comprises a thin flat rectangular body 1 formed preferably of sheet metal. The opposite longitfidinal edges 2 of the body 1 are disposed parallel with each other. Formedintegral with one end of the body 1 are two ears or fingers 3 turned back from said body comparatively sharply so that said cars will be spaced slightly from said body but disposed parallel therewith. The adjacent edges 4 of the ears 3 are spaced slightly apart and extend will be seen that the edges 2 of the body 1 will define the longitudinal edges of the plait, the edges l of the ears 3 defining the inner edges of the folds in the body of the fabric or drapery.
l/Vhere the device is to be used as a means of retaining the plait in the fabric or drapery, the same is preferably provided with a rearwardly extending hook 6 punched therefrom as shown whereby the device may be suitably connected with a supporting element.
I However-the device may be used simply as a means of forming plaits and determining their position in the fabric as would be the case indress-making, in which case the hook 6 is dispensed with and the body 1 and ears 3 preferably elongated slightly as shown in Fig. 3. By the use of a device of this construction the formation and positioning of plaits in a piece of goods or fabric may be effected with ease and expedition, considerable time being saved through avoiding measuring of the plaits such as is necessary without the use of a device as mentioned, the latter serving as a templet. Of course in the latter employment of the device the body 1 thereof must be of a width preferably beveled as shown in order to fa-- .cilitate the wrapping or folding of the fabric about the same in theemployment of the device.
WVhile I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of 'variation and modification'without departing. from the spirit of the invention. 1, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of. construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come Within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire'to secure by Letters Patent is:
A device for forming and retaining plaits comprising a thin flat substantially rectangular body having parallel longitudinal edges; and two back-turned thin flat ears connected integrally with and extending longitudinally of said body parallel therewith and: spaced therefrom, said ears being connected With-said body onlj at one end two sulhcribing '\\1l'I' "eS-. thereof, the adjacent edges of said ears being LES A RISE-REV parallel and spaeed sllghtly apart and posl- 5 tioned intermediately of said first mentioned -Witnesses: V n
edges, substantially as described. JXRTH'UR A l; In testimony whereof I have signed my Josmm ELli.
