Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 9, 1918.
Application filed February 9, 1916. Serial N 0. 77,259.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANKLIN O. Moonn, a citizen of the United States, residlng at Glendale, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fly- Swatters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention has for its object to provide an improved fly swatter which may be folded so that it can be easily carried in the pocket of the user or on a hook secured to the inner portion of the coat or other garment of the user.
Another object of this invention is the provision of a fly. swatter embodying a swatting element constructed of wire screen or other suitable material, a handle pivotally secured thereto and means for yieldably returning the handle in extended or operative position with relation to the swatting element.
With these and other objects in View, the invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the claim hereto appended, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction maybe resorted to Without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
Figure 1 represents a top plan view of the improved fly swatter,
Fig. 2 represents .a side elevation thereof, partly in section,
Fig. 3 represents a fragmental longitudinal sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 1, and r Fig. 4 represents a fragmental transverse sectional view on the line ofFig. 1.
Referring to the drawing in detail, wherein similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts of the several views, the numeral 5 indicates generally theswatting element which is preferably constructed of two substantially rectangular pieces of wire screen 6 having three of the marginal edges thereof bound with cloth or other suitable flexible material 7 One end of the screen sections 6 is secured between the side members of a frame 8 which is preferably con structed of a strip of sheet metal doubled along a longitudinal line as at 8 to provide a pair of side members 8 which engage the opposite sides of the screen sections 6. The ends of the frame 8 are preferably beveled as indicated at 9 so as to eliminate sharp corners which might tear or otherwise injure the clothing of the user when the swatter is inserted or removed from the pocket.
The screen sections 6 are rigidly clamped at one end between the side members of the frame 8 by rivets 10 and a pivot pin 11 is positioned through the side members 8 and the screen sections 6 at a point adjacent the longitudinal center of the frame 8. The inner edges of the screen sections terminate in spaced relations to the bight portion of the frame 8, thus leaving the space between the portions of the side members 8 unobstructed and rendering such portions compressible.
The free ends of an elongated U-shaped handle 12 are pivotally secured to the pin 11 and engage the outer surfaces of the side members of the frame 8.
The handle 12 may be swung to folded or inoperative position as illustrated in dotted lines in Fig. 1 so as to facilitate carriage of the fly swatter in the pocket of the user.
The handle is yieldably retained in extended or operative position as illustrated in full lines in the drawing by pairs of spaced bosses 13 struck out from the spaced portions of the compressible portions of the side members 8 between which the legs of the handle 12 are received.
What I claim'is:
A fly swatter including a strip doubled along a longitudinal line to provide spaced and compressible side members, a swatter element clamped between the extreme free edges of the strip and terminating in spaced relation to the bight portion of the latter, a U-shaped handle pivotally secured to said strip, and pairs of bosses struck out from the In testimony whereofl allix my signature compressible portions of the spaced side in presence of two Witnesses. members of the strip adapted to receive the FRANKLIN O. MOORE.
parallel members of the U-shapecl handle Witnesses: 5 for retaining the latter in extended or op V FRED H. POSTER,
erated position. WILLIAM W. POSTER.
