Description

J. DIR.
FL Y SWATTER. APPLICATION man main. 1920.
1,368,247. Patented Feb. 15,1921.
nurreo' .STTES PATENT OFFICE.
:rosnrn DIR, or scanner, IOWA.
FLY-SWATTER.
Application filed March 12, 1920.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH DIR, citizen of the United States of America, residing at Stuart, in the county of Guthrie and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fly-Swattcrs, of which the following is a specificaton.
The invention relates to improvements in fly swatters.
It is an object of the invention to provide a fly swatter which is composed of material light in weight, yet constructed in such a durable fashion as to enable the swatter to withstand the rough uses 'a device of this kind is subjected to. o
A. further object of the invention is to provde a swatter having a detachably con nected handle which may be readily attached to or disconnected from the body of the swatter to permit packing thereof for shipment, or when being carried by the user so as to occupy little space.
More specifically, the invention comprises a swatter composed of a double fold of openwork material, having a reinforcing metallic strip along one side. interposed between the folds and suitably secured thereto there is provided a handle attaching portion formed with alined apertures intermediate its ends adapted to receive the oppositely disposed oiiset ends of a handle adapted to detachably engage the swatter.
In the accompanying drawings I have dis closed a single embodiment of the invention, but it will of course be understood that the same is susceptible of many changes with regard to the material, construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the invention.
In the drawings,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device;
and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail view.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings wherein like reference characters indicate corresponding parts, the numeral 1 designates a swatter consisting of the rebent folds 2 and 3 of wire screen or other material of an openwork or like nature. Disposed along the free upper edges of the folds 2 and 3 of the body of the swatter is a channel plate 4, of metallic formation, having indentations 5 therein for securing the channel member in position, and also apertures 6 passing therethrough.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patentedi eb. 15, 1921.
Serial No. 365,264.
lnterposed between the folds 2 and 3 of the swatter is a suitable handle receiving member 7 composed of wire or other like material having hooked end portions 8 adapted to be retained in position by studs 9 passing through the folds 2 and 3. The wire portions of the handle receiving memher 7 also extend through the opening 6 in the channel member 4, and at this point are looped so as to provide eyes 10 disposed in axial alinement and adapted to receive the opposed offset ends 11 of the handle 12.
It will be observed that the eyes 10 are located in the handle attaching portion 7 at a point intermediate its ends and adjacent the channel bar 4. In attaching the handle, as disclosed in Fig. 1, one of the handle legs is disposed on one side of the connecting piece of the handle attaching member 7, while the other leg of the handle is disposed upon the opposite side of said attaching piece, and the same is slightly bent so as to enable the offset end 11 to be inserted in the proper receiving eye in the handle attaching member.
When the handle is attached in this manner there is no freedom or relative movement permitted between the body portion 1 and the handle and the entire article has the same rigidity as if the swatter were com posed of a single piece of material, yet possesses the added advantages of a detachable handle which enables the device to be knocked down for shipment or the handle to be removed when the swatter is to be carried in a suitcase or the like.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:
l. A device of the character described comprising a body portion consisting of re-' bent folds of material, a handle attaching element having a portion thereof disposed between said folds and secured to the body portion, and a detachable handle co6perating with said handle attaching member.
2. A device of the character described comprising a body composed of openwork material having a rebent fold, a handle attaching part consisting of a metallic strip having portions disposed between the folds of the body, and loops in the different sides thereof forming eyes, in combination with a detachable handle having oppositely disposed end portions projecting from legs thereof entering said eyes.
3. A device of the character described 7 comprising a body composed of openwork posed end portions projecting from legs material having a rebent fold, a handle atthereof entering said eyes, one of said legs taching part consisting of a, metallic strip being disposed upon one side of a portion of 10 having portions disposed between the folds the handle attaching part, and the other on 5 of the body, and loops in different sides the other side thereof.
thereof forming eyes, in combination with a In testimony whereof I afiix my signatui'e. detachable handle having oppositely dis- JOSEPH DIR.
