FASTENING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Eatent.
Patented Aug. 27, 1918.
Application filed April as, 1917. Serial No. 163,960.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN EmoKsEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Blue Mounds, in the county of Dane, State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fastening Devices; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to fastening devices, and is directed more particularly to a fastener designed for employment as a buckle for overshoes, arctics and the like.
An object of the present invention resides in the provision of a fastener of the above character which is of ample and durable construction; is reliable and efficient in use; is convenient of manipulation; and, is composed of a minimum number of parts whereby it may be manufactured and marketed at a relatively low cost.
With the above and other objects of similar nature in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and ar rangement of parts, set forth in and falling within the scope of the appended claim.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the invention, the parts being illustrated in the position it will assume when attached to a shoe and in operative position.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section therethrough.
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the blank from which the outer or casing member of the fastener is formed; and,
Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the latch.
Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawing, the improved fastening device comprises outer and inner members 5 and 17 respectively; one secured to each side of the upper part of a shoe or the like, as shown in Fig. 1, said members sliding one within the other and having means for locking them together in various positions of adjustment so as to bring the sides of the shoe upper closer together to hold them farther apart. The outer member 5 is preferably in the form of a substantially rectangular casing that is con structed from a unitary blank of sheet metal. The blank from which the casing is formed is illustrated in Fig. 3 of the drawing, the
portion 6 of which constitutes the top wall of the casing, the portion 7 the bottom wall thereof, the portion 8 an end wall, and the portions 9 the side walls, said portions 6, 7, g and 9 being folded on the dotted line is into the requisite shape, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. .Vings 11 are carried by the side walls 9 and bent beneath the bottom wall 7 to retain the parts in their relative positions.
Formed in the top wall 6 of the casing adjacent its open end is an aperture 12, while mounted upon said top wall is a spring catch 13 having at one end a downward projection 14 which enters the casing 5 through the aperture 12. The catch 13 is also preferably formed from a single piece of spring steel and has struck laterally therefrom intermediate its length an arm 15 which is riveted or otherwise suitably secured to the top wall 6 and operatively supports the catch thereon. The end of the catch remote from the projection 14. is in the form of a finger piece 16 through the medium of which the catch may be conveniently manipulated.
The inner member 17 of the fastener is also formed from a length of fiat metal that is bent upon itself intermediate its ends and results in upper and lower portions 18 and 19 respectively, disposed in spaced relation to each other and maintained in such position by bending the free end of the upper portion into contact with the lower as clearly shown in Fig. 2. Provided in the upper portion 18 of the member 17 is .a longitudinal series of apertures 20 adapted to register selectively with the aperture 12 in the top wall of the casing and receive therethrough the projection 14: of the catch whereby to acljustably secure the fastener in assembled position.
It is evident that the members 5 and 17 may be readily disengaged when desired by pressing upon the finger piece 16 of the catch to withdraw the projection let thereof from the related aperture 20, the members being thus rendered freely movable with respect to each other.
What I claim is A fastener of the character described, comprising an elongated casing forming a female member and having an aperture in its top, a resilient catch having cut and stamped therefrom a supporting arm fixed to the top of said casing to space said catch therefrom exteriorly of the same, a male his pa'ten may be obtained for five 3 net wee In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
