My invention relates to improvements in combined hat linings and sizereducers, and has for its primary object a hat lining which is supplied with a loose portion adapted to be folded up into the hat, the'loose portion being secured within the hat along one edge and provided with fastening means along its opposite edge so that the same can be secured within the hat and form a pocket, the pocket being adapted to receive suitable hat padding so that the size of the head receiving opening can be reduced.

A further object is to construct a hat lining which is provided with an adjustable pocket adapted to receive resilient fibrous material so that the head receiving opening of the hat can be reduced in size, the adjustability of the pocket permitting more or less padding material to be placed therein so that the size of the pad can be regulated to suit the requirements.

In the construction of my device,.I employ a hat 6, which is provided with a lining 7 The lower edge 8 of the lining 7 is secured to the hat at the head receiving opening. Secured between the lining and the hat and located at the rear of the hat is a member or flap 9. This member has one edge 10 secured in position, the remaining edges being free and unattached so that it can be folded up into the hat as illustrated in Fig. 1 or depend therefrom as shown in Fig. 2. The edges 11, 12 and 13 are preferably hemmed so that there will be no rough edges. Placed along the edge 11 at predetermined points are securing means 14, which are preferably gummed tags, which can be moistened so that the edge 11 can be held in position within the hat crown.

In Fig. 4 the depending member 9 is provided with one part 15 of a snap fastener, which is adapted to be engaged with either the parts 16 or 17 so that the flap 9 can be secured in adjusted position. It is to be understood, of course, that there will be a plurality of members 15 secured to the portion 9 similar to the adhesive 14 illustrated in Fig. 2, and the corresponding members 16 and 17 secured to the hat lining in Fig. 4. The flap is provided with continuous strips of adhesive material 18, which are placed along the edges 11, 12 and 13 so that the pocket can be closed entirely along the sides and ends.

In using my device, the hat is sold as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, that is Without any padding whatever and if the hat should be too large, the purchaser lowers the member 9 as illustrated in Fig. 2 and places a quantity of resilient material 19 against the hat lining. The flap 9 is then folded upward and the hat tried on, and, when a suflicient amount of padding has been placed in position, the adhesive carried by the flap 9 is moistened, the flap 9 turned up in position as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 3 and held there until the adhesive sets. In this way it is possible for a person to buy a hat and put in a pad to make the hat fit snugly according to requirements, and without the necessity of purchasing a separate hat size reducer and placing it within the hat. The padding material is preferably cotton or similar fibrous resilient material, although this is optional with the wearer.

In Fig. 4 snap or glove fasteners are used instead of the adhesive. This may be desirable from certain points of view although it does not give the range of adjustability that the adhesive fastening means gives.

, By the use of this device, absolutely no sewing is necessary nor is the purchase of any hat size reducer required to make a hat fit properly, and the fitting can be done very quickly and accurately. This is not the case where readymade hat size reducers or pads are purchased and placed in the hat as there is always a possibility with these pads that the hat is either just a trifle too tight or too loose because the pads come in a uniform size and thickness.
