Be it known that I, MARY THRASHER, citizen of the United States, residing at Nashville, in the county of Davidson and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Neckwear, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates linen fabric or the like, which are intended for use on ladies dresses and which are manufactured separately from the dresses to be attached to the dress by the wearer, the invention having vision of a novel collar'of this type which is adjustable so as to lit dresses having varying shapes of neck opening or of varying length around said neck opening.

Hitherto the fact of the lack of adjustability of these collars has been a considerable drawback in the marketing thereof since the retailers have to carry an excessively large stock, the excess of which has frequently to be disposed of at a loss. This difiiculty I have obviated by my novel collar construction which renders any given collar readily adjustable to fit different dresses.

For further comprehension of the inven tion and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.

Fig. 3 is a similar view to Fig 1 but showing a slightly modified construction.

Fig 4 is a transverse sectional view of this modified form of collar this view being taken on the line H of Fig 3, but showing the inner edge as arranged when attached to the neck of a dress.

In constructing my improved collar I provide two straight pieces 10 of suitable material which may be of linen fabric, or lace or a combination of the two and of any desired ornamental design. for an object the promay be of any suitable size, a length of eighteen inches and a width of four or five inches having been found suitable. The other edge of each piece is hemmed down as at 10 to provide a longitudinally extending recess through whichv a narrow tape '13 is run, the one tape extending through both pieces which are thus strung on the tape, the ends of the tape extending beyond the ends of the said pieces. This tape enables the two pieces to be readily drawn up orcontracted in length to fit the collar to the neck of the dress, the collar then being in the form of a rutlie. The collar can then be readily pinned onto the neck of the dress and later basted in place.

IVith this arrangement, as will be apparent, the collar of this type is rendered more salable, since the prospective purchaser is not in any doubt as to the possibility of fitting the collar upon the dress to which she may contemplate applying it.

In Figs. 3 and a I have shown a further development of my invention in which a pair of recesses are formed along the inner edge of each piece by hemming down the said edge as at 10. In the recess immediately adjacent the edge an elastic tape 15 is placed, while the usual fabric tape 13 is placed in the other recess, the two tapes being attached to the pieces 10 at the joint ends of the latter only. In applying this collar the elastic tape can be stretched or tensioned and then secured along its length to the said pieces by basting stitches so that when released it draws the said pieces evenly to rufiied form from end to end of the latter. When the collar is attached in place the inner edge portion is folded behindthe collar as shown in Fig. 4 of the drawing, and after the collar has been secured in place by an initial line of stitches passed therethrough below the turned back portion, the basting stitches referred to may be removed to free the elastic tape, and the upper edge of the collar stitched in place. This top edge portion may if desired be folded inside the neck of the dress.

Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States is as follows y 1. A collar of the typedeseribed com prising two separate pieces of material each formed with a recess extending along the upper edge thereof, and a single tape inenr her passed through said recesses. 2. A collar of the type described comprising two separate pieces of material each formed with a recess extending along the upper edge thereof, and a single tape member passed through said recesses, and serving as the connecting medium of the two pieces.

3. A collar of the type described co1nprising two separate pieces of material each formed with a recess extending along the upper edge thereof, and a single tape 1ne1n her passed through said recesses, and serving as the connecting nieciuni of the t vo pieces, the said tape being secured to the said pieces at the two adjacent ends of the latter only.

4. A collar of the type described comprising separate pieces of material each formed with a pair of recessesvextending along the upper edge thereof, and elastic tape extending through one recess, and an inelastic tape extending through the other recess.

5. A collar of the type described comprising separate pieces of material each formed with a pair of recesses extending along the upper edge thereof, and elastic tape extending through one recess, and an inelastic tape extending through the other recess, said tapes being connected to the said pieces at the two adjacent ends of the letter only.

6. A collar of prising formed with a pair of recesses extending along the upper edge thereof, and elastic tape extending through one recess, and an inelastic tape extending through the other recess, said tapes being connected to the said pieces at the two adjacent ends of the latter only, one of the said recesses bein closer to the inner edge than the other, ant the elastic tape being located in the said recess.
