rlliis invention relates to improvements 'in cutis which are particularly adapted to be used on knickers of that type having overlapping ends. c,
.5 The objectV oi2 my invention is to provide means whereby tlie'overlapping endsmay be detachably connected to permit the cuff to be opened, and to provide in connection therewith meansv whereby the i made to assume various sizeswithout wrinllingor gathering, andat the saine time possess a certain amount of elasticity, to perform the double vfunction of supporting the lower end'of 'the knicler leg and' also to 'serve as a garter iforsupporting the stockings. e
My inventionk consists in the construction, arrangement and' combination of the various parts of the lmicker, whereby the objects more fully set forth, pointed out in my claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which: y
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved cuff. y
Figure 2 isan end elevation of same, the cuff being shown partly folded.
Figure 3 is a segmental view of the lower end oi' a lmiclrer leg to which the cuff is attached, the cuil and leg portion being laid out flat and a portion of the cuff rolled down to show the construction ofthe elastic band.
The numeral 10 indicates the lower end ot the leg portion of a knicker, which'has its edges overlapping, and secured together by a seam 11, which terminates a short distance Jfrom the lower endV of the leg portion, so that the lower end of the leg is open. The lower end of the leg portion is provided stitches 16. Thecuft A15 and thev lining 14 are the saine length as the leg portion 10 and the overlapping portion 12, so that the cuit 15 is provided with an underlapping portion 17 and an overlapping portion 18. The
overlapping portion 18 is provided with button holes 19.
A strip of fabric 2O is secured between the end of the member 18 and the lining 14,'said cuffv `may be contemplated VV are attained, as hereinafter with an inwardly extending extension 12 unlining being secured in position by means *i of thebutton hole stitclies21 and a row of' cross stitches 22. The tree end of the strip 20'has one end of an elastic band 23 secured toit. AThe opposite end ot the elastic bandA 231s provided witha fabric strip 24, preferably made of vthe same inaterialas the leg portion 10. f'l`he free end of the-strip 24 extends through a slot 25 inthe overlapping portion 17.' This slot 25 is substantially in linewith the seam 11. The outer end of the strip 24 is provided with buttons 26 den signed to enter the button holes 19 when the culi is inzafclosed position, in ,the manner illustrated inFigures 11and2. The elastic A.
band 23 andthe strips`20 and 24 are supported between the cuff 15 and' the lining member 14.. i` f. 'i
Thus it will be seen that I have provided a 4'cuff :adapted to be adjusted toV various sizes, due to the fact that the band 23 is formed of elastic material, which will permit the overlapping portion 18 to assume v arious positions over the overlapping portion 17, and at the same time close the cuff,
presenting a'neat appearance, even if thev cud is vmoved to its expanded position, on
the cuff will always lit theleg ofthe wearer, and permit comparatively free movement of the muscles without injurious effects, and at they same time serve as a garterfor retaining the stockings` in position when the culi is Vplaced over the upper end of the stocking.
From the construction just described, it will bev seen that'the members 20, 23 and 24 are rigidly securedto the cuff only byf 'n account of the strip 24 being made orf the same material as the cuff ortion.
The elastic band provi es means whereby.
means of the stitches 21 and 22 at one end of f the member20. The members 23 and 24 are slidably mounted between the cuiifV and the lining 14, so'that the cuff 15 always fits smoothly, anyvariation in size being taken care rof by thev member 18 moving relative torthe member 17 and being yieldably re-v tained in its closed position' by the band 23.
'I claim as my invention:
1. A pair of knickers yhaving leg portions, the lower ends of the leg portions being open, the ends o the open portion overlapping, a cu secured tothe lower end of the leg portion, said cuff being provided with overlapping end portions and with a transverselyarranged slot, one end of said cuff being provided with button holes, an elasticy band secured to the button hole end of said cuil and supported adjacent to the inner :face of said cuil' and having its opposite end eX- tending through said slot and underlapping the button hole end of said culi, and buttons for the underlapping end of said elastic member'.
2. A leg cuff for knickers comprising a band having one end overlapping the other7 the undcrlapping end formed With a transverse slot, the overlappingend being provided With button holes, an elastic member mounted adjacent to the inner face of said band having one end secured to therbutton hole end of said cuil' and its other end extending through saidA Slot and -underlapping the overlapping port-ion of saidcuff, and buttons for the underlapping portion of said elastic member. A Y
A leg, cuil for knickers comprising a band having one end overlapping the other, the underla'pping end formed With a transverse slot, an elastic member secured to the inner face oi the overlapping portionof said band and designed to liev adjacent to the inner `face of saidband and havingkits opposite' end extending through said slot beneathithe overlapping portion of said band7 `and means for connecting `,thie
.free end of said elastic ineinber with the overlapping portion "of said band.
4:. A legcu'il' for knickers comprising a substantially rectangular band having one end overlapping the 'other and the underlapping portion provided With a transverse slot, a
strip of 'fabric secured to the inner facel of the overlapping end of said band, an elastic member'having onekend secured to said fabric, a second strip of fabric secured to Ytliedree end of said velastni and lformed of the same material as the said band and extending through said slotV and underlying said overlapping portion, and means for detacliably securing the overlapping portion irithhthe free end of said'I second strip of fabric. l
5; A leg cuff for knickers band having one end overlapping theother, one of the overlapping endsfbeing formed with a transverse slot, a contraetable member V llying adlacent tothe inner faceof said'band `and" having one Vend secured"tliereto',' the op;
