Be it known that I, JOSEPH M. ATKINSON, a. citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented certainnew and useful Improvements 'in' Combination Garments, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an improved combination garment designed especially for wear by children.

Garments of this character are subjected to hard usage and strains when worn, not only because of the activities of the normal child but also because garments of this character are usually des1gned to support certain of the outer garments, such as the trousers and stockings, and during play,V the movements of the child produce considerable `strains on parts of the garment.

The obje/ct therefore of the present invention is to provide an improved construction of garment for children which will meet the re uirements.

Re erring to the drawing the numeral .'i, designates one front part of the garment and 6 the other front part thereof.

These two front parts are each preferahl p formed of a single piece of material which extends from the shoulder all the way to the lower edge of the legf-the two parts be ing detachably connected by a central placket 7, which extends from the neckopening 8, to the closed crotch 9.

At the rear, the garment has un upper buck part 10, which has the usual cut- outs 11 and 12 at the neck and shoulders to roact with somewhat similar cut-outs in the front parts, to produce neck and ann openings. This back part 10 is united to the front parts by vertical side seams 13.

A reinforcing band 14, extends entirely around the garment from one edge of the placket 7, to the oplmsite odge thereof.

Vertical stay and reinforcingr straps l5. are also stitched to the garment and extend Specillcation of Letters'latent.

continuously from the band, 14, at the front up over the shoulder' and down the back, terminating at said band 14, at the rear of the garment. As the band 14, at the rear of the garment is elevated with respect to the extreme lower edge 16, of the back part 10, the stay straps 15, also stop short of said back-edge, as clearly shown in Fig. 3, of the' drawing.

I also prefer to secure acentral stay strap 17, at the rear or back part 10, which strap' extends vertically from the band A14, up to the neck opening 11.

y At the point of joinder between each stay strap 15 and 17, and the band 14, I secure suitable fastening devices 18,such as huttons for the purpose of securin skirts or trousers from the waistband 14. hese buttons are each strung on a tape 19, and the tape is inserted between the upper edge of the encircling band 14, and the lower end ot' e stay strap`15 ,or 17, as the case may be, so that any strain on the button will exert a. downward pull on the upper edge of the band 14.

I also provide buttons 20, on the hand 14. below the ends of the Stay straps, for a purpose that will presently be explained.

By reference to Figs. El and 4, it will he noted that the back part 10, below the band 14, has its opposite edges secured in the side seams 13, and that the lower edge 1G, of said back part, instead of being straight. from side to side is arched in a cross-wise direction, being higher at the center than at the side seams.

This construction provides a more comfortable garment when the wearer is in a stooping or sitting position.

The seat and rear leg-portions of the garment, in the present instance, is formed of two parts or pieces of inelastic fabric 21 and 22, respectively which latter are secured to the front parts 6 and 5, hy means of an inseam 2?. and a short side seam 24.

In the present instance the short lower side seams 24. do not extend as far up the sides as the lower edge of the hack part l0,Y hut the seat portions 21 and 22, extend upwardly a considerably greater distance, whereby to completely overlap the lower portion of the hack part 10. The free part of the seat and leg portions therefor form a part of a drop-scat flap 25.

To the upper edge of the drop seat Hap I secure a crosswi'se strip 26, of elastic wehbing which strip extends from one free side-edge ot' the seat-flap to the opposite free side-edge of the same, as clearly shown in Fig. 2, of the drawing.

Across the upper edge of the elastic strip 26. l secure a double-thick inelastic, strip 27 which extends throughout the length ot the elastic strip and is provided with a plurality of button-holes 28.

Both the elastic and the inelastic strips 26 and 27, are. therefore permanentl)F secured t0 and forni a part of the drop seat' Hap.

At the opposite free side-edges l provide an inelastic strip 29. which extends from the extreme. tree edge 3U. of the scat Hap to the lower edge of the upper hack part` as shown in Fig. 3, whereby to render the seat-flap inelastic at its extreme side edges.

The seat and rear leg portions 2l and 22 of the garment are provided with a reinforce 3l. which latter has its lower edges terminating at and secured in the inseam 23, and its upper edge terminating at the lower edge of the cross-wise elastic strip 2G.

At the frontl ot' the garment l provide` a tali 82, on cach front part 5 and which tahs are secured in the scain that holds the reinforcing band i4, in place. rl`he purpose of these tahs is t'or the athichnient of stocl-:- ing supports. rThese two tahs 8i are secured in the reinforcement or hand 14. adjacent to the lower ends of the stay straps l5. so that the strains placed ou thc talis will he transmitted to and he taken up h v said straps 15, which extend from the front across the shoulders` and down the haelt.

The strains applied to the seat and the seat Hap are taken np h v the elastic insert, strip 2G. which is interposed hetwcen the seat and the lap tastenings 2U. and hy this means the liability of tearing away of those fastcnings is reduced to a ininiinuni.
