Description
A. C. BERRY.
' GARMENT.
APPLICATION FILED FEB-7,1919.
Patented June 21, 1921.
WITNESSES INVENTO R x16. affifiy .tJNITED STATES'PATENT OFFICE.
ANNE COLLINS BERRY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
GARMENT.
Application filed February To all whom it may concern.-
' Be it known that I, ANNE CoLLINs BERRY, a citizen of the United States and a resident of the cit of New York, Flmhurst, borough of ueens, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Garment, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to 'childrens and ladies garments, such, for instance, as shown and described in the Patent of the United ates, No. 81,297, filed by me on February 29, 1916.
The object of the invention is to provide certain new and useful im rovements in outer or undergarments having legs, such as rompers, bloomers, drawers, combination chemise and drawers, and the like, and whereby the desired comfort; to the wearer is insured, and the wearer can readily exercise the lower limbs in walking, running, or jumping without being unduly hindered by the garment. Another object is to render the garment exceedingly strong and durable especially at the crotch and to allow convenient opening at the crotch, and leg sides for sanitary and other pur oses.
With these and other ob ects in view, the invention'consists of certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claim.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the 1mproved garment in the form of rompers;
Fig. 2 is an inverted plan view of the same with one of the legs partly opened;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged cross section of the same on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a front elevation of the improved garment in the form of a combination chemise and drawers; 1
Fig. 5 is an inverted plan view of the same with one of the legs partly opened; and
Fig. 6 is an enlarged cross section of the same on the line 66 of Fig. 4:.
The garment shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 is in the form of rompers and comprises a body 10 having a neck opening[11, collar 12, sleeves 13, and legs 14 and 15. n practice, the body 10 is preferably made from a single piece of Specification of Letters Patent.

material doubled up across the shoulders and fastened together along the under sides of the sleeves and the sides to produce the body 10. The legs 14 and 15 are providedwith hems l6 and 17 containing elastic bands fas-- tened at the ends to the hems to gather the latter with a view to fit the hems snugly around the thighs of the wearers legs. An opening is formed at the bottom of the garment extending sidewise from the inner side of the leg 14: across the crotch 20 to the inner side of the other leg 15, and this opening has its walls formed of two strips or flaps 21 and 22 of a doubled-up fabric material, prefen ably straight-cut and sewed to the edges of the opening. The strip 21 extends over the Patented J... 21, 1921. 1
top of the strip 22 when the strips are in closed position, as plainly indicated in the drawings, the ends of the strips being fastened to the ends of the corresponding hems 16 and 17, as plainly shown in Fig. 2. The strips 21 and 22 are adapted to be fastened together and for this purpose the uppermost strip 21 is preferably rovided at its under side with buttons 25 a apted to engage buttonholes 26 formed transversely in the bot- 1 tom strip 22 to securely fasten the strips or flaps 21 and 22 together. It is understood that I do not limit myself to the particular fastening described as the same may be varied without deviating from my invention. Two of the buttons and corresponding buttonholes 25 and 26 are located at the legs 11 and 15 and one button and its buttonhole are arranged at the middle of the strips and hence when the two strips are overlapped as described and fastened together they securely 010 the opening which extends from one leg to the other.
a It will be noticed that by the arrangement described the two closing strips 21 and 22 strongly reinforce the body of the garment at the bottom from one leg to the other, and the strips can be readily opened for donning or for taking off the garment or for sanitary i For a combination chemise and drawers,-
as shown in Figs. 4, 5, and 6, the two closing strips or flaps and 41 are formed by doubling up the free edges of two pieces 42 and 43 of a material sewed at its outer edges to the body 44 of the garment, the said pieces 42 and 43 forming portions of the legs 45 and 46 and the crotch of the body 44. In this case the hems and elastics are dispensed with but the flaps 4O and41 are adapted to be fastened together Joy fastening devices such as buttons and buttonholes 50 and 51 in the same manner as above described in flaps 40, 41 are formed of the pieces 42 and 43 to give the desired looseness to the under side of the garment at the crotch and the le s.
having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A garment comprising a body having leg openings and a straight out from the leg openings into the body, front and the rear; finishing pieces attached to the respective edges and laid in horizontal relationship transversely of .the crotch to i easily enable the pieces to fall into an inverted V-shape; and complementary fastening means on the ieces.
