5. F. KENYON HINGE STRUCTURE Filed' April 13, 1925 I N VEN TOR.
Patented Oct. 11, 1927.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SILAS F. KENYON, OF INDIAN ORCHARD, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO THE FIBER- LOID CORPORATION, 01? INDIAN ORCHARD, MASSACHUSETTS, A CORPORATION OF MASSACHUSETTS.
HINGE STRUCTURE.
Application filed April 13, 1925. Serial No. 22,924.
This invention relates to improvements in hinge structures and the method of making the same, and is directed more particularly to the hinged connections for a receptacle and cover made of pyroxylln or the like.
here members such as a cover and box of pyroxylin are hinged together it has been customary to use metal hinges and in some instances hinges made of pyroxylm.
Both forms offer disadvantages, in that the metal hinges tend to discolor the pyroxylin due to corrosion and since pyroxylin 1s susceptible to shrinkage, the metal hinge becomes loose. Pyroxylin hinges heretofore made are not sufficiently strong to withstand the hinged action.
I am aware that it is not broadly new to provide a hinge to pyroXylin articles or that it is new to provide hinges of pyroxyl n. Accordingly, the novel features of my 1nvention therefor resides in the provlsion of a hinge member of pyroxylin that is formed in a novel manner and secured to the receptacle and cover in such a manner as to provide a strong rigid unified structure.
The invention may be practiced in various ways and will be disclosed in the form at present preferred in connection with the accompanying drawing in which:
Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of areceptacle and cover hinged together accordlng to the structure of my inventlon,
Fig. 2 is an enlarged elevational view of the hinge members,
Fig. 8 is a perspective View of one of the hinge members,
Fig. is a perspective view of a portion of the side wall of the receptacle showing the slots for receiving the hinge members; and
Fig. 5 is a plan view of a side wall of the receptacle having a pair of hinge members inserted in the slots and joined thereto.-
The side walls of the said members are slotted.
Referring to the drawings in detail a receptacle 1 and cover 2 are represented which The side walls 1 or 2 of the cover and receptacle are slotted as illustrated at 5, the said slots preferably being arranged to receive the ends of the hinge members 3. The hinge members 3 are preferably of py roxylin or a material similar to that of the cover and box and are formed so as to fit snugly within the slots provided therefor.
In assembling the parts the hinge members 3 are inserted in the slots 5 and a suitable solvent applied to the interfitting parts. The solvent will dissolve, according to its characteristics, the pyroxylin material at the jointure and cause the material to flow and nit or bond together so that the hinge members and wall become a unified solid strong and rigid structure.
Pintles 6 in the form of solid or hollow rivets are inserted in the openings of the hinge members, whereby the receptacle and cover may have the desired hinged action.
The relative proportions of the hinge members may be as desired and as many mating pairs of members may be employed as is necessary to provide the desired hinged effect. The form of the hinge member may be varied as may be desired so long as it is made to interfit with a receiving socket or slot of the cover and box, to which may be applied a solvent for dissolving the material whereby they are securely bonded together.
Many changes may be made in the form of the invention without departing from the scope thereof and I therefor prefer to be limited by the following claims rather than by the foregoing description.
What I claim is:
An article of manufacture comprising, a boxlike receptacle and a closure therefor of pyroxylin having side walls the edges of which abut one another, the said walls being provided with parallel slots which extend from the 'ointure of said abuttin ed 'es hinge members of pyroxylin having their outer ends pivotally connected for a hinge action and their free inner ends inserted in said slots of the receptacle and closure and fixed thereto by a solvent of pyroxylin so that said members are integral therewith to provide a solid unified structure.
In testimony whereof I haXe affixed my signature.
SILAS F. KENYON.
