proper so that the trunk portion of the gar-- ment has a yield or give in different directions, said gusset being continued up to the front and rear waist line of the arment, and having its front and rear e ges secured thereto throu hout their entire length.
Other and urther objects not at this time appearing will be hereinafter referred to.
The invention consists of the novel construction hereinafter described and finally claimed. i
The nature, characteristic features and scope of the invention will be more fully understood from the. following description taken in connection with the accompan ing :5 drawings forming part hereof, and in which: r
Fig. 1, is a. perspective View of a bathing garment embodying the invention and showing the manner of using the same.
I0 Fig. 2, is a view in front elevation showing the trunk portion of the garment in full lines and the remainder of the garment in dotted and dashed lines.
Fig. 3, is a view in section taken upon 5 the line 33 of Fig. 2, and
Fig. 4, is a view of a blank used in forming the gusset. V
. For the'purpose of illustrating my invention. I have shown in the accompanying I drawings one form thereof which is at present preferred by me, since the same has been found in practice to give satisfactory and reliable results, although it is to be understood that the various instrumentalities of which my invention consists can be variously arranged and organized and that my invention isnot limited to the arrangement and organization of the instrumentalities as herein shown and described.
The bathing garment which is of the socalled one-piece type is applicable for use by men, and women, but for illustrative purposes the bathing garment has been shown in the drawing as being of the type provided with a skirt for use by women.
recise The numeral 1 designates the body portion of the bathing garme'nt'and the numeral 2 designates the skirt portion thereof. The
trunk portion of the garment comprises leg portions designated 3. The material of the no leg portions is arranged to yield laterally. In other words the material is knitted with the courses ranging from the waist-line to the leg bottoms. The crotch portion of the garment extends from the waist-line 5-5 05 both fore and aft downwardly to within a short distance. of the leg bottoms. The
crotchis formed by the gusset 4,- see Fig. 4,
and is made of the same sort of material as the rest of the garment but the courses of the knitting extend in a direction across the garment instead of up and downwith respect thereto so-that the crotch portion of the garment is yielding or stretchable in a direction toward or away from the waist line 5 5. The gusset {at its place of connection with the waist-baud is designated 6 and is relatively narrow. From the opposite part 6 the gusset gradually widens out towards its center which is relatively Wide, 84) as is designated at 7 The widenedportion 7 terminates in opposed darts 8 which darts in the manufacture of the garment may be readil fitted to the leg portions at the time of mahin the seams 9. As thus constructed 85 and attac ed to place the gusset 4 from the waist-line to the bottom of the crotch portion 'is of ample dimensions which not only providescomfort to the wearer but permits the garment to snugly fit the person to prevent wrinkling and the like; and in addi tion, by reason of the fact that the leg portions are stretchable in one direction and the crotch portion in an o posite direction the garment is capable o providin a neat, close fitting, and comfortable'bat in gar ment. Abathing suit arranged an constructed as above described provides what may be termed a standard size suit. 'In other words, the present garment is suitable to fit persons of varying heights. This is possible because the -garment yields or stretches sufiiciently' from the crotch portion to the shoulder portion to accommodate persons of difierent heights. 1 as above described also possesses the advan- I ta'ge of *being provided with straight seams thuseliminating the conventional 'V-shaped crotch portions. This not only facilitates ease and rapidity in manufacture but also 11 The garment 1 7 adds to the comfort of the wearer in that ated as desirable in the statement of the invention and the above description and while I have in the present instance shown 'and' described the preferred embodiment thereof which has been found in practice to give satisfactory and reliable results, it is to be understood that the same is susceptiblefof modification in various particulars without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: f
In a one-piece bathing garment, an upper body portion provided with a trunk portion, a central gusset of the same length at the front and rear of the garment for the crotch portion thereof and extended'to the garment waistline at front and back at which waist-line portion the gusset is both fhre and aft of a width smaller than at its place of juncture with the crotch part of the trunk portion, the inner edges of the trunk legs and the edges of the said gusset converging upwardly with the outer edges of the trunk legs also converging upwardly, the said gusset being arranged to yield or stretch in a vertical direction in contradistinction to the lateral yield or stretch of the trunk legs, said gusset being secured at its edges throughout its entire length front and back to the'contiguous trunk legs to form a garment permanently closed at its front and rear.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto signed my name.
. WILLIAM OSBORNE, JR.
