GARMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. '7, 1916.
Application filed April 10, 1914, Serial No. 830,917. Renewedl'ebruary 2, 1916. Serial No. 75,857.
peror, and residing at Berlin, German Empire, have invented new and useful Improvements in Garments for Pregnant and Nursing Women,-,of which the following is.
a specification.
This invention relates to improvements upon garments of such a kind as are described in my pending U. S. A. application No. 790,478, filed 18. Sept. 1913, and the object of my improvements is to render the also as a walking dress or costume or even as a dinner or evening dress or costume,
- whereas the garment as described and shown in the beforementioned pending application is intended solely for usein lying-in or maternity hospitals and is consequently of simple and cheap make, allowing also of an easy cleaning and quick repair. In that garment the waist and the-skirt are eithermade in one piece or they are otherwise firmly connected with each other. In view of the increase of the body during the time 7 of pregnancy, that garment is provided with an appropriately adjustable girdle, there arising, of course, such folds in it as follow from the state of the respective woman. I
garment of this make is suflicient for hospitals of the kind in question, as there is, in
' such a place, no need, of course, to cast a veil over the condition of the female body, the only requirement being that the garment permits of proper adjustment. Moreover,
the garment does not enable the wearer to.
conceal her state, owing to its make, as mentioned. However, at home, on walks, during visits, and the like, a lady has a natural desire to cast a veil over her state as long as possible, and the garment in question has, therefore, been modified in such a manner that that desire may be complied with, the
thus improved garment fitting always verywell, without odd folds, the body offering merel the appearance of a little overgro , without an actual indication of its state. Also in the improved garment which forms the subject matter of the present invention, the waist folds are held in place by the body, without needle and thread, but as the front of the skirt is raised in conformity wlth the increase of that circumference, means are provided to lower it appropriately far, as is more fully described hereinafter. 1
Referring to the accompanying drawing, the front 6 of the waist has also in this instance, like that in the pending application, a rather long closure 01 on the left side, and a somewhat shorter closure e on. the right side. The waist 12 and the skirt Z are firmly connected with each other at the sides and at the back, but .where these 'two parts are not so connected, there a lurality of rows of spring buttons isprovid girdle g is such that at any rate all buttons are completely covered.
Having now described my invention, what .I desire to secure by a patentof the United States is: v
In a garment, the combination, with a waist, of a skirt permanently connected with said waist at. the back and at the sides; means for adjustably and detachably connecting the front part of the skirt with the front part of the waist, and a 'rdle; 'said means being arranged in a plura ity of rows situated one below the other, and said girdle being adapted to cover all said rows.
