Application filed March e, 1926. serial Np. 92,982.
This inventionrelates to ash pans, and has for one of its objects the provision of a novel, simple and inexpensive device of*y this character from which vthe ashes can be easily and quickly discharged into a boX, barrel or other suitable receptacle without creating dust. the invention comprehending an ash pan having a bottom that can be gradually moved from closed to opened position so as to' permit the ashes to be discharged into'thereceptacle in a manner to prevent the creation of dust. y y
A further object of thelinvention is the provision of an ash pan with a cover adapted to prevent the scattering of the ashes while carrying the ash pan from the stove tothe ash receptacle and adapted to prevent'the scattering the ashes from'the upper side of the ash pan while discharging the ashes into the receptacle, the cover being freely removable from the ash pan to permit of its being used as a dust pan.
With the foregoing and othervobjects in view, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of an ash pan constructed in accordance with my invention,
Figure 2 is a View in rear elevation of the ash pan, A
Figure 3 is a view in side elevation of the ash pan,
Figure 4 is a transverse sectional view taken on the plane indicated by theline 4 4 of Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a longitudinal sectional view` of the ash pan provided with a combined cover and dust pan, and
Figure 6 is a detail sectional view taken on. the plane indicated by the line `6 6 of Figure 3.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description, and desig nated in the several views of the accompany-y ing drawing, by similar reference characters.
The ash pan comprises lateral sides 1, a frontside 2, a rear side 3, and a bottom 4. The bottom 4 is connected at its front edge to the lower edge of the front side 2 byk means of a hinge 5. When in closed posr tlon, the bottom 4 lies n full abutting contact with the lower edges ofthe sides 13.
and any suitable meansmay beemployed to releasablysecure the bottomin closed po sition. This means may. as shown, consist of an .eye rsecu'red to the' bottom 4 Aand ahoolr 7 lsecured to'theffront side 2. To permity of the application of vthis means at the outer side of an ash pan. the bottom-4m made to projectl slightly-beyond the `rear side 3, the eye 6 being secured to the upperV 5 side of the projecting portion of the bottom and the hook 7 pivoted to the outer side of the front side. The bottom 4is provided atv its lateral edges with upstandingjlianges 3 which contact with the outer surfaces of the sides 1'to prevent the ashes from working out of the ash pan between the lower edges of said sides and the bottom and to prevent the lateral spreading of the ashes while being discharged from the ash pan. A bail 9 is pivoted to the sides 1 as ,at 10, Vand is adapted when in position for useto occupy the full line position shown most clearly in Figures 1, 3 and 5. When the ashpan is in the ash pit of the stove, the bail 9y is adapted to occupy the folded position indicated by dotted lines in Figure 3. The bail 9 is pivoted 'to the ash pan rearwardly beyond the vertical transverse center of the latter. When the ash pan is supported by the bail 9.- the tilting movement of the former is limited by spring stops 11 which are secured to the outer surfaces ofthe sides s 1 and engage the bail. The stops 11 are also adapted to hold the bail 9 in position for use against casual movement into its folded position. A handle 12 is secured to the outer surface of the side 2 and provides means by which theash pan canfbeinserted in and withdrawn from the ash pit of the ,9
stove. A cover 13 is removably positioned upon the upper side of the ash pan and is provided with lateral flanges 14 which contact with the outer surfaces of the sides 1 and a front flange 15 which. contacts with the outer surface of the side 2. The cover 13 prevents the scattering of the ashes while carrying the ash pan from the stove to the ash receptacle and while discharging the ashes from the ash pan. The cover 13 is adapted, when not used in connection with the ash pan, to be employed as a dust pan, and to permit of its being employed for this purpose and'to permit of its easy application to and removal from the ash pan, itA
inthe ash pit of the stove.
is provided at its front end with a handle 16.
In practice, when itis desired todump the ashes accumulated. therein, the ash pan is Withdrawn from the ash pit of the stove by .means of the handle l2. The cover 13 may be applied to the ashA pan either before or after it has been Withdrawn from the ash pit. The bail 9 is then swung into its upright position, and the ash pan. is carried by the bail to the ash receptacle. The. hook 7 is then. Withdrawn from engagementy with the eye 6to free the' bottom 4 Which-lattenpart is then gradually lowered until all of the ashes have been diseharged. froml the ash pan. After the dischargjlfe` of the ashes, thev bottom'lt is moved into and securediinrclosed position, and after the lowering of thebail` 9 into its folded position and the vremovalof the cover 13,.the ash, panA is again placed It should be understood that the drawing is merely illustrative anddoesnot pretend to give exact. proportions.
