Description
Oct. 4 V J. ROBERTS DE TAUHABLEFINGER BOWL Filed Aug. 27. 1926 JaimlZeri INVENTOR ATTORNEY Patented Dot. 4, 1927.
UNITZED :srairzja s was oreassawrca, cameraman.
iiEEBAGHABLE srreaa sown Application filed 'August 27, 192%. serial No.'131;92Q-- 'att'ached to plates for the serving of fruits or the like, whereby the user'may cleanse their fingers atter eating the same, which elimi natesth-e necessity of serving the finger bowl separately after the course, thereby savi ngtime in :the'servi-ngot-a meal.
Alnother object of the invention is theprovisi'on of a finger bowlatta'ch-ment which is readily removable from the plate, 5'so that the plate and bowl may be thoroughly cleansed after use to keep the samej'in a sanitary condition, and to allow the plate to be used without the attachment thereon when desired. w
A further object of the invention aims to provide a finger bowl attachment which is simple in construction, inexpensive of manufacture and attractive in appearance. ,7
lVith these and-other objects in View, the invention resides in certain novel construction and combination and arrangement of parts, the essential lteatures of which are hereinafterfully described, are particularly pointed out in the appended claims, and are illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which r Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved finger bowl attachment shown in applied position upon a plate.
Figure 2 is a bottom plan view of the same.
Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view on the line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Figure 4: is a detail perspective view of the bowl per se.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, the reference numeral 10 designates my improved finger bowl attachment in 1ts entirety and which is shown applied to a plate 11 of the usual well-known construction.
The attachment 10 comprises a pair of semi-circular sections 12, 12 which have one of their meeting ends hingedly connected together as at 13, whereby the two sections may be swung about the hinged joint to spread the same when attaching the devlce to the peripheral edge of the plate 11. The sections 12 are constructed of metal and each includes a horizontally disposed flange 14 which overlies the peripheral edge of the plate 11 and a diverging flange 15 which engages the underside edges of the plate to prevent the attachment from {being li ted from the plate when the sections are rl jflqa closed position. a l 7 v Y The finger bowl is {SllQWfIl -'at, 16:andis crescent shaped inEplan to follow'the contour of the plate so "as not to project-too :Earbe- "yond the periphery'o'f'thesame: The bowl is pivotally connected to one of the sections 12 ad acent the free end thereof asat 17, while the inner wallet the-bowl has a spring clip 18 extending; therefrom ffOI' coaction with a 'pin or stud 19 extending firom the flange 15 of th'eotherwsection 12 adjacent the free e-nd'of the same, From the@fore going' description, it will be seen that when the finger bowl is swung aboutits pivot 17 to causethe "clip 18 to engage the pin'19, the sections 12- will embrace the peri heral edge of the plate and will be locked against igvi 'ngging movem'ent about 7 the hinged ij oi'nt For the purpose of relieving the strain on the pivot 17, I extend thebdttono 0f the bowl "to a plane parallel to the base-of the plate, 'so as to rest 'upon 'a supporting surface :with the plate. This also prevents tipping-cit -the plate d'ue :to the weight of theflbowl and its contents. A flange "E20 extends from the inner wall of the bowl and rests directly' upon the flange 1 1 of thesections 12, which, also lJBIlClS to relieve the pivot-17 of ny weight due'to the bowl and its contents,
'llhefinger bowl attachment may readily be i emoved'gfrom the :pl-ate by releasing the spring clip 18 from the stud or pin 19, then swinging thebowl 16 about its pivot 17 after which the two sections 12 are swung about the hinged joint 13 so that the flanges -15 clear the peripheral edge of the plate whereupon the attachment may be lifted clear of the same.
In practice, the attachmentis applied to the plate in a manner already described, and if fruit or the like is to be served, the same is either placed directly upon the plate 11, or into another dish which in turn is set upon the plate, and the bowl 16 is filled with water. It will therefore be most convenient for a personafter eating the food from the plate to dip their fingers into the bowl for cleansing.
The attachment can be made in various sizes to .fit dillerent size plates and. also may be constructed of different metals.
to the fact that the same overhangs the sides of the plate, and if desired, the top surface of the flange may have a suitable design inscribed thereon so as to add, orna.--
parting from the spirit of my invention,
and- I therefore do not limit myself to the exact details of construction herein set forth nor to anything less than the whole of my invention limited only by the appended claims.
What is claimed as new is 1.A device of the class described comprising a pair of hingedly connectedsections adapted to engage the peripheral edge of a plate, a fin er bowl, and co-acting means between sa1d finger bowl and said sections for locking the free meeting ends of said sections together. i
2. A device of the class described comrisin a air of hin edlv connected sections adapted to engage the peripheral edge of a plate, a finger bowl swingingly mounted on one of said sections adjacent the free end of the same, and co-actmg means between said finger bowl and the other of said sections for locking said sections together and for locking said finger bowl against swingingmovement.
3. A device of the class described cmnpris- Q ing a pair of hingedly connected sections adapted to engage the peripheral edge of a plate, a finger bowl swingingly mounted on one of said sections adjacent the free end of the same, and co-acting means between said finger bowl and theother of said sections for locking said sections together and for 4. An attachment of the class described comprising an annular member formed of a pair of hingedly connected sections, a finger bowl carried by the free end of one of said sections, and co-acting means between the other of said sections andsaid finger bowl for locking the free ends of said sections together.
5. An attachment of the class described comprising an annular member formed of a pairof hingedly connected sections, a finger bowl carried by the free end of one of said sections, and co-acting means between the other of said sectionsand said finger bowl for locking the free ends of said sections together, said means including a spring clip carried by 'saidbowl for engagement with a pin on said section.
6. A device of the class described comprising a pair ofpivotally connected sections, a finger bowl pivotally supported by said sections, and co-acting means for locking said sections in co-acting position.
7. A device of the class described comprising a pair of pivotally connected sections adapted to engage the peripheral edge of a plate, a finger bowl swingingly mounted on one of said sections, a flange on the inner wall of said finger bowl for overlying the joint between said sections and resting thereon when said sections are in closed position, and co-acting means for holding said sections and said finger bowl against swinging movement.
In testimony whereof I have aHiXed my signature.
' JOHN ROBERTS.
