INFANTS TOILET SEAT Filed Aug. 19, 1944 ZZZ/mf Patented Nov. 13, 1945 UN I-TED STATES PATENT QF F IQE INFANTS? mortars-EAT RichardC. Lewis, Winnetka, Ill; Application August 19, 1944, Serial No; 550.271
2 Claims.
Myinvention: relates. to aminfants: toilet seat adapted to .be removably: attached. to a-:. conventional toilet-seat.
The prevailing type-of detachable iniantstoilet seats have metal parts, hooks, studs, staples, with rough corners and. edges. that scratch toilet seats on which they are placed. They are also complicated in structure, and diflicult to get on and oil the conventional seat.
It is among the objects of this invention to solve these problems and to provide an infant's toilet seat that will not scratch, wear, or mar the seat on which it is placed. My construction is simple and eliminates complicated parts, is easy to place in use and to remove from th conventional seat. My seat is safe and cannot slip out of position in use and injure the child.
My invention also contemplates such other objects, advantages and capabilities as will later more fully appear and which are inherently possessed by my invention.
While I have shown in the accompanying drawing a preferred form of my invention, yet I wish it understood that the same is susceptible of modification and change without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Referring to the drawing, Fig. 1 is a. top plan view of my device; Fig. 2 is a perspective bottom view of the same; Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 33 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is an end elevational view of my device being applied to a larger conventional seat; Fig. 5 is an end elevational view of my device in place on a conventional seat and Fig. 6 is a side elevational view of my device.
The embodiment selected to illustrate my invention comprises a seat having a substantially central opening II and a front slot l2 communicating therewith.
Hingedly attached to the undersurface l3 of said seat ID are a pair of spaced holding or gripping members I4. In my preferred form illustrated herein I provide an upper hinge l having a portion I6 attached to the undersurface l3 adjacent one side of the upper portion of opening II, and a lower hinge I! having a portion 18 attached to the undersurface 13 adjacent a lower portion of opening ll. Each of said hinges has a portion IS on the other side of binge pin 20 attached to opposite extremes of the upper surface of upper portion 2| of one of the holding members [4. There are also similarly spaced upper and lower hinges l5 and 11 each having a portion l8 attached to the undersurface 13 adjacent the other side of upper and lower portions of opening H, and each having a: portion: won; their other side of; hinge pin.- 20 attached 110713118. opposite extremes of the. upper surface of upper portion 2liot theothei'. of the holding members. l4;
In eachtofi-therholding members 14 the upper portion: 2| extends. diagonally: upwardly and outwardly from the upper hinge l5 and diagonally downwardly and outwardly from the lower hinge I! to rounded portions '22 on opposite ends of its outer edge 23. When the holding members I4 are moved against the undersurface of seat I0, their outer edges 23 extend slightly beyond the outer edges of seat I0.
Each of said holding members l4 has a middle portion 24 attached to the undersurface of upper portion 2| beginning at the inner edge 25 thereof, extending outwardly and ending in a curved outer edge 26 a substantial distance inwardly of outer edge 23.
Each of said holding members l4 has a lower portion 21 attached to and covering the undersurface of middle portion 24 and having an integral flange portion 28 extending outwardly beyond the curved outer edge 26 of middle por: tion 24.
In my preferred form I prefer that upper portion 2|, middle portion 24 and lower portion 21 of each of my holding members l4 be separate pieces and attached as hereinbefore described for ease in assembly of the parts, yet it is within the contemplation of my invention that my holding member I4 may be made, cast or otherwise formed in a. single piece with corresponding portions 2|, 24 and '21 being integral portions of the holding member l4.
A padding 29 of non-scratch material such as cotton flocking, soft felt, sponge rubber or any other suitable material is attached to flange portion 28, curved outer edge 26, and the undersurface 30 of upper portion 2 I.
In use the undersurface 30 of the upper portion of each holding member rests against the top surface 3| of the conventional toilet seat 32, the curved outer edge 26 of middle portion 24 contacts the curved portion 33 of th seat 32 and the flange portion 28 of the lower portion 2'! bears against the undersurface 34 of the seat 32. This arrangement provides for a non-slip fit between the babys seat l0 and the larger seat 32, as the baby sits on the babys seat II], the downward pressure tends to force. the flange portion 28 upwardly against the undersurface 34 to hold the seats in fixed position. This accurate fit co-operates with the padding 29 to prevent scratching and marring of the seat 32,
The hinges of my holding members are so p0- sitioned and my seat I0 is of such a size that my seat In may be easily positioned on and simply withdrawn from seat 32. By the mere pivoting of either one of the holding member M, by slight inward movement on the outer edge 35 of lower portion 21 the other holding member may be moved inwardly, and the seat I 0 removed from seat 32.
Having thus: described my invention, 1 claim:-
1. An infants toilet seat comprising a seat portion having an openin therein, a pair of gripping members hingedly attached to opposite sides l of the undersurface of said seat portion, each of said gripping members having a curved middle portion, and flanges on either side of said curvedand the flanges contacting the upper and under surfaces of said conventional seat.
2. An infants toilet seat comprising a seat portion having an opening therein, a pair of gripping members hingedly attached to opposite sides of the undersurface of said seat portion, each of said gripping members having a middle portion having a curved outer edge, a top portion attached to the top surface of said middle portion and having a flange portion extending outwardly beyond the top surface of said middle portion, and a lower portion attached to the under surface of said vmiddle portion and having an abbreviated flange-portion extending outwardly beypnd saidf middle porti0Il', Said gripping members adapted to pivotto removably position said infants toilet seat on a conventional large size toilet seat having a seat portion with a curved opening, the under-surface of said flange of the top portion of each of said gripping-members resting on the top surface of the conventional toilet seat the upper surface of the flange of the bot:
