JOHN T. BLAKE, 0F ELWOOD, TNDIANA.
SANITARY SPITTOON.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN T. BLAKE, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Elwood, in the county of Madison and State of Indiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sanitary Spittoons, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference generally to improvements in receptacles and more particularly relates to a sanitary sputum cup.
The invention has forits primary aim and object to provide a device of the above mentioned character embodying a holder and a cup capable of being removably acconnnodated and retained in the holder in such a manner as to readily receive sputum deposited therein and at the same time being positioned so as to be quickly removed therefrom when it is desired to empty the cup.
-More particularly this invention contemplates the provision of a device of the above mentioned character wherein an improved closure is provided for the holder, resilient means serving to hold the closure normally closed; while acting in conjunction therewith is improved manually operable means for moving the closure to an open position when desired.
It is a more specific object of this invention to provide a device of the above mentioned character wherein the operating means is peculiarly designed and so positioned relative to the holder that it acts as a handle to facilitate the carrying of the device by the user.
Among the other aims and objects of this invention may be recited the provision of a device of the above mentioned character with a view to compactness and wherein the number of parts are few, the construction simple, the cost of production low and the efficiency high.
Other improvements and novel details in the construction and arrangement of the various parts of the device will be brought out more in detail in the description to follow, which for a clear understanding of the invention should be considered in connection with the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, and wherein is disclosed for the purpose of illustration a convenient and satisfactory embodiment of the invention. It is to be noted in this connec- Specificafcion of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 4 1919.
Application filed. May 12. 1919. Serial No. 296.484.
Fig. 3 is another transverse sectional view taken at right angles to Fig. 2, and
Fig. 4 is a perspective detail of the closure.
' Similar characters of reference are employed in all of the above described views to indicate corresponding parts.
Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawings there is provided a holder generally designated by the numeral 1 desirably in the form of a box-like body having a central opening 2 in the top about which is formed a funnel-like mouth 3 while one side wall of the body of the holder is formed with an opening 4: to permit of the removable receptionof a box-like cup 5 within the body. A handle 6 is connected to the outer or exposed wall of the cup to facilitate the insertion and removal thereof while a pivoted latch 7 on the adjacent wall of the body of the holder serves to removably retain the cup in the holder and flush with the wall in which the opening 4: is provided.
As intimated an improved closure has been provided and in reducing this feature of the invention to practice opposed flanged supporting guides 8 are connected to the under surface of the top of the body of the holder while slidably mounted therein is a closure plate 9 the rear edge of which is formed with a curved recess 10, designed to aline with the adjacent edge of the opening 2 when the plate is moved to an open position. Pins 11 depend from the inner end of the plate near the opposite sides and have connected therewith adjacent ends of coiled compression springs 12 the opposite ends of which are connected to the inner face of the adjacent wall of the body of the holder and tensioned to normally hold the plate in a closed position and to automatically return the plate to such position when released.
Suitable operating means in the present instance consists of a lever 13 the lower end of which is pivoted to one of the side walls of the body near the bottom, the upper end portion of the lever projecting above the holder and being offset inwardly to form a handle 14. Connected to the lever is one end of a link 15 the main portion being ar ranged through an opening in the body while the inner end is loosely connected to a flange 17 depending from the lower surface and near the adjacent end of the plate 9. In this connection it is to be observed of course, that the springs 12 serve to yield ingly hold the handle lever against the holder while owing to the link connection 15 the late is normally held beneath the opening. WVhen the owner desires to use the cup however, it is only necessary to swing the lever and thereby slide the plate 9 against the tension of the springs 12 so that sputem will pass through the opening 2 and fall into the cup 5.
A serrated thumb piece 18 is carried transversely of the lever near its pivot and acts as an abutment for the thumb of the user of the cup when the fingers are arranged against the under surface of the bottom of the holder thereby facilitating the carrying of the device.
On the top of the holder 1 and adj acent the funnel like mouth 3 there is mounted a cup 19 in communication with the interior of the holder through a valve 20. This cup is designed as a holder for a disinfectant which may be periodically admitted to the interior of the holder and the cup 5 by opening the valve 20.
It is believed in view of the foregoing description that a further detailed description of the operation of the invention is entirely unnecessary. Likewise it is believed that the advantages of the invention will be readily apparent.
As many changes could be made in the above construction and many apparently widely different embodiments of this invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limited sense. It is also to be understood that. the language used in the following claims is intended to cover all the generic and specific features of the invention herein described and all statements of the scope of the invention which as a matter of language might be said to fall therebetween.
What is claimed is:
l. A device of the character described including a box-like body having an opening in its top and an opening in one of its side walls, a cup insertible through the opening in the wall and resting on the bottom of the body beneath the opening in the top and having one of its walls closing the opening in the side wall of the body, a latch for preventing accidental displacement of the cup, a closure plate slidably mounted beneath the opening in the top, resilient means for normally holding the plate in a closed position, a handle lever pivotally connected at its lower end to one of the walls of the body, and a link connection between the lever and the plate whereby when the lever is swung the plate will be slid to an open position against the tension of the resilient means.
2. In a device of the above character, a box-like body having an opening in its top, a closure plate for the opening, resilient means for normally holding the plate closed, an operating lever pivoted to the body and in connection with the plate and normally held against the body by the resilient means, and a serrated thumb piece carried trans versely of the lever near the pivot point thereof.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature. ture.
JOHN T. BLAKE.
