Description

TATE S GEORGE HAVELL, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN CURRY-COMES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 161,787, dated April 6, 1875; application filed February 18, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE HAVELL, of Newark, in the county of Essex and in the State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Curry-Combs; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference be ing had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction of a curry-comb tooth, as hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a currycomb embodying my invention, and Fig. 2 is a perspective view of one of the tooth-pieces.
A represents the handle, with shank B, having branches B B, to whichthe back 0 is secured. D represents a toothed plate, which is rolled in the form shown in Fig. 2that is to say, the upper or base part, which is to lie against the under part of the back 0, is provided with a bead or rib, c-and from this enlargement to the teeth a, at the bottom of the plate, the metal is tapered. Upon the head or rib is a series of prongs or studs, a a, which are intended to pass through openings in the back of the comb, and there riveted. By thus forming the tooth-plate a broad bearing-surface is given to it at the point of connection to the comb-back. By the head or rib c the tooth has the broad bearing-surface without adding unnecessary weight and metal to the tooth, and the same is given a neat finish and a light appearance with a suflicient amount of elasticity for the purposes desired, which it would not have if the tooth were simply tapered entirely from top to bottom.
I do not claim a curry-comb tooth made tapering from top to bottom, nor do I claim broadly a curry-comb tooth having rivets for connecting it to the back plate, as I am aware that such is not new.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The tooth-bar D, formed with the head or rib c at its upper part, and provided with the rivet-prongs a a, as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 22d day of January, 1875.
GEORGE HAVELL. IL. s.]
