SAW HANDLE.
Application filed September 5, 1925.
The present invention relates to a saw handle, and has for its object to provide a handle of this character which embodies novel features of construction whereby it "can be readily used in connection with the back edge of the saw for marking off desired angles.
Further objects of the invention are to provide a handle of this character which is comparatively simple and inexpensive in its construction, which can be readily adjusted to mark off a right angle or some oi her desired angle, and which provides the usual effective hold for grasping the saw when using the same.
Une particular embodiment of the invention will be shown and described for illustrative purposes, although it will be understood that many modifications and changes can he made in the details of construction without departing from the spirit of the invention.
For a full understanding of the invention reference is to be has. to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a plan view of one end of a saw blade which is provided with a handle constructed in accordance with the invention, the handle being set so that it can be used in cooperation with the rear edge of the saw blade to mark off a angle;

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated on all of the views of the drawing by like reference characters.
Referring to the drawings, which illustrate one of many possible embodiments of the invention, the numeral 1 designates a handle section which is rigidly connected to the saw blade B, and 2 a oompleinental handle section which corresponds in shape to the handle section 1, and which is pivotally mounted so that it can be swung into different angular positions. The two handle sections 1 and 2 have inner faces which are disposed in substantially the plane of the saw blade, and are similar in shape so that when the handle section 2 is brought over the handle section 1 it registers therewith and the two handle sections form a handle of the usual type. The inner edges 3 of the handle sections are cut off square and arranged at right angles to the rear edge l of the saw blade when the movable handle section 2 is in registry with the fixed handle section 1. It will be obvious tha the inner edges 8 of the handle then cooperate with the rear edge 4% of the saw blade to form a square which can be used for marking off right angles.
The inner surfaces of the handle sections preferably have sheet metal plates 5 applied thereto, said plates being held in position by suitable fastening members such as the screws 6. The plate 5 on the fixed handle section 1 terminates short of the inner end of the handle section and abuts against the end of the saw blade B which is secured to the fixed handle section. The handle sec tions are pivotally connected by means of a tubular stud 7 which extends transversely through the same, the head '7 of the tubular stud engaging the outer face of the fixed handle section 1, while a screw 8 which passes through a circular plate 9 fitting against the outer face of the movable handle section 2 is threaded in the interior of the tubular stud. The handle sections are thereby held together, although the movable handle section 2 can be swung into different angular positions with respect to the fixed handle section. g

handle section 1 is a circular plate or boss 10 which surrounds the pivot stud 7 and has a number of notches 11 formed in the pee riphery thereof. The inner face of the movable handle section 2 is recessed at 12 to receive the boss 10 and has the plate there of cut away to provide a clearance space for a fiat detent lever 13. This lever is pivotally mounted at one end thereof, as at 14:, while the opposite end thereof is connected to tension spring 15 which normally tends to swing the lever inwardly into operative position. The spring is mounted in a suitable recess which is formed in the handle section 2 under the face plate 5 thereof. The intermediate portion of the detent lever is formed \ith a detent or tooth 16 which is adapted to engage a selected one of'the notches 11 in the boss to hold the movable handle section in an adjusted position.
The outer cage of the' detent lever 13 projeets into the hand receivingopening 17 of the handle and the swinging end thereof is provided with a lateral knob or finger piece 18 by means of which the lever can be pulled outwardly against the action of thetension spring to disengage the de tent 16 from the notches 11 of the boss 10. l hen the detent lever is thus held in inoperative position the movable handle section 2 can be swung into any desired position, after which the detent lever is released and the detent permitted to engage one of the notches ll of the boss. As shown on Fig. 3 of the drawing, there are three notches 11 which are arranged for locking the movable handle section 2 either in registry with the fixed handle section 1 or at a 45 angle in either direction from the said normal position of the handle. This enables thesaw handle to be used for narhing off either a right angle or ad5 angle, and it will be obvious that by providing additional notches 11 or by arranging the notches in a different manner provision may be made for locking the movable handle section in any desired angular position.
T he inner side of the hand receiving openiii l! in the movable handle section 2 has a locking 1 ver 19 applied thereto, one end of the locking; lever being pivoted at 20 on one flange of an angular plate 21 which is applied to the handle, while the other end thereof is provided with a handle 22 and a lug which is adapted to frequently engage one of the flanges of another angular plate to hold the locking lever in operative position. The pivot end of the locking lever has a cam formation, as indicated at 25, and the eccentric portion of the cam forcibly engagesthe projecting edge of the detent lever 13 to preventmovement'of the detent lever when the locking lever is swung into the opening of tits handle. However, when the looking lever 19 is grasped and swung outwardly away from the plane of the handle the eccentric portion of the cam 25 is moved away from the detent lever 13 so, that the latter can be pulled outwardly preparatory to shifting the position of the movable handle section. Accidental release of the movable handle .ection is thereby rendered impossible. When the two handle sections are in registry with each other they cooperate to form 1 ing off different angles so that there is no i need for the user of the saw to provide a separate tool for use in marking oif angles.
The locking lever 19 may be provided with a lateral arm 32 which is adapted to enter a notch in the outer edge'of the lever 13 to provide a positive loci: for the lever, rendering it impossible for the lever to be pulled ou'wardly into inoperative position when the arm is engaged with the notch The handle of the saw may, if desired, be provided with one more bubble tubes which are arranged to be disposed at right angles to the rear edge 4: of the saw blade when the handle sections are in normal position, tiereby enabling the saw to be used as a plumb. Two of the bubble tubes 30 are shown on the drawing, since by using two of the bubble tubes and closely observing both of them greater accuracy can be obtained, as applied to the saw handle and arranged to be parallel to the straight edge l of the saw blade when the handle sectiohs are in normal position. This bubble tube enables the saw to be used as a level and the necessity for the purchase ano carrying around of a level in addition to the saw is avoided.
Having thus described my invention what i claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. The combination with a saw blade having a toothed edge and a straight edge, of a handle applied to the saw blade and extending in the same direction as the saw blade said handle being divided in the plane of the saw blade into similar and complemental sections, one of the complemental sections being rigid with the saw blade, a pivotal connection between the handle sections whereby the other handle section can be swung into different angular positions, the last-mentioned handle section having a straight edge which is adapted to cooperate with the straight edge of the saw blade to measure the different angles.

The combination with a saw blade having a straight edge, of a handle applied to the saw blade and divided in substantially the plane of the saw blade into similar and complemental sections, one of which is rigid with the saw blade, means for pivotally mounting the other handle section, said pivotally mounted section having a straight edge which is adapted to be swung into dif- 'lerent angular relations to the straight edge of the saw blade, and means for locking the pivotally mounted handle section in different positions.
l. The combination with a saw blade having a straight edge, of a handle applied thereto and divided in substantially the plane of the saw blade into comnlemental sections, one of which is rigid with the saw blade, a pivot member connecting the handle sections, a boss projecting from the rigid handle section, and detent means carried by the swinging handle section for engaging the boss to lock the swinging handle section in dill'erent angular positions, said swinging handle section having a straight edge which is adapted to cooperate with the straight edge of the saw blade for marking oft different angles.
5. The combination with a saw blade having a straight edge, of a handle applied thereto and divided in substantially the plane of the saw blade into complemental sections, one of which is rigid with the saw blade, pivot member connecting the handie sections, a boss projecting from one of the handle sections and having notches therein, and a detent lever on the opposite handle section for engaging a selected notch of the boss to lock the pivotally mounted handle section in any desired position, said pivotally mounted handle section having a straight edge which is adapted to cooperate with the straight edge of the saw blade for marking diiferent angles.
6. The combination with a saw blade having a straight edge, of a handle applied thereto and divided in substantially the plane thereof into complemental sections, one of the sections being rigid with the saw blade, pivot member connecting the complemental handle sections, a boss projecting from one of the sections and provided with plurality of notches, a detent lever carried by the other section for engaging a selected notch of the boss to hold the pivotally mounted handle section in different angular positions, and means for locking the detent lever in operative position, the pivotally mounted handle section having a straight edge which is adapted to be brought into different angular relations to the straight edge of the saw blade for marking oft" different angles.
7. The combination with a saw blade, of ahandle applied thereto and divided in substantially the plane of the saw blade into coinpleinental sections, one of the compleinental sections being rigid with the saw blade, a pivot member connecting the complemental handle sections, a boss projecting from one of thehandle sections, a detent lever mounted on the other handle section for cooperation with the boss to lock the pivotally mounted handle section in different angular positions, said detent lever pro jecting beyond an edge of the handle, and means applied to the edge of the handle for engaging the projecting portion of the detent lever to lock the same in operative position, the pivotally mounted handle section having a straight edge which is adapted to be held in different angular relations to the straight edge of the saw blade for marking oil different angles.
8. The combination with a saw blade having a straight edge, of a handle applied to the the plane thereof into compleinental handle sections, one of which is rigid with the saw blade, a pivot member connecting the handle sections, a boss projecting from one of the handle sections, a detent levermounted on the other handle section and adapted to cooperate with the boss to lock the pivotally mounted handle section in different angular positions, said detent lever projecting beyond an edge of the saw handle, and a locking lever pivotally mounted on the edge of the saw handle and having a cam portion adapted to engage the detent lever to lock the same against movement, the pivotally mounted handle section being formed with a straight edge which is adapted to be held in dillerent angular relations to the straight edge of the saw blade for marking oft dilierent angles 9. The combination with a saw blade having a straight edge, of a handle applied thereto and divided in substantially the plane of the saw blade int-o complemental sections, one of the sections being rigid with the saw blade, a pivot member connecting the handle sections, a boss project ing from one of the handle sections, a detent lever mounted on the other handle section and adapted to cooperate with the boss to lock the pivotally mounted handle section in different angular positions, and cam lever mounted to engage the detent lever to lock the same against movement, the pivotally mounted handle section being formed with a straight edge which is adapted to cosaw blade and divided in substantially ill operate with the straight edge of the saw blade for marking oft difierent angles.
10. The combination with a saw blade having a straight edge, of a handle applied to the saw blade and divided in substantially the plane thereof into complemental sections, one of the sections being rigid with the saw blade, a pivot member connecting the compleinental handle sections, a boss projecting from one of the sections around the pivot member and provided with a ries of peripheral notches, a flat plate pivotally mounted on the inner face of the other handle section and formed with a detent adapted to engage a selected notch ot the boss to lock the pivotally mounted handle section in an adjusted position, a spring normally tending to swing the plate to hold the detent in operative position, and a finger piece connected to, the plate and projecting from the edge of the handle to provide a means for retracting the detent, the swinging handle section. being formed wits a straight edge which is adapted to cooperate with the straight edge of the saw blade for marking off different angles.
11. The combination with a saw blade having a straight edge, of a handle applied thereto and divided on substantially the plane thereof into complemental sections, one of the sections being rigid with the saw blade, a pivot member connecting the co1nplemental handle sections, a boss projecting from the inner face of one of the handle sections and surrounding the pivot member, said boss being formed with a plurality of peripheral notches, a plate pivotally. mounted upon the inner face of; the opposite handle section and formed with a detent adapted to engage a selected notch of the boss to hold the pivotally mounted handle section in an adjusted position, yielding means normally tending to swing the plate to hold the detent in operative position, a finger piece connected to the plate and projecting from the edge of the handle, and a cam locking lever mounted upon the handle for engagement with the plate to lock the same against movement, the pivotally mounted handle section being formed with a straight edge which is adapted to. cooperate with the straight edge of the saw blade for marking oft different angles.
12. The combination With a saw blade having a toothed edge and a straight edge, of a flat handle projecting longitudinally from the saw blade, said handle being divided longitudinally in the plane of the saw blade into similar and complemental sections which cooperate with each other to form a hand-hold When the sections are in registry with each other, one of the sections being rigid with the saw blade, and means -i 'or pivotally mounting the other complemental section of the handle, said pivotally mountedhandle section having a straight edge which can be swung into difi'erent angular relations to the straight edge of the saw blade.
