Description

G. H. WATKINS.
SPANNER WRENCH. APPLICATION nuzo JAN. 8. 1921.
Patented July 12, 1921.
1 NV EN TOR.
UNITED STATES GUSTAVE HAROLD WATKINS, OF JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA.
SPANNER-WRENCH.
Application filed January 8, 1921.
the angle at which the handle is positioned,
relative to the jaw may be held in different positions, thus adapting the wrench for operation where it otherwise would be impossible to use a wrench by reason of obstructions being in the way.
Vith this object in view the wrench which forms the subject matter of this application comprises certain novel elements, units, parts, features, functions and combinations as will be hereafter more fully described and specifically defined in the appended claim.
My invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon form a part of this application, and in which drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the wrench in its first adjustment as applied to a ring nut, or member to be turned. The dotted outline indicates the next succeeding adjustment, and
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the back of the wrench and the detailed construction by means of which the actuating spring is applied to the pawl.
Like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
The improved spanner wrench which forms the subject matter of this application comprises a handle 1 of conventional form, provided with a slot 2 (see Fig. 2) at the larger and broader end 3. The walls of said slot have registering apertures 4;, 4 for the insertion of the pivot pin 5, 5, upon which the jaw 6 is mounted in rotatable engagement therewith. Said jaw 6 is curved to conform approximately to the periphery of a ring nut, or member to be turned. It is Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 12, 1921.
Serial No. 435,843.
further provided with a hooked end 7 for slidably engaging with suitable serrations or recesses in the periphery of the ring nut (see Fig. 1) and is further provided with serrations on its convex side for a purpose about to be disclosed.
A pawl 8 is pivoted to the handle 1 on a pin 9 and a suitably dimensioned spring 10 is fastened to said handle in such a way as to permit its free end to press against the pawl 8, causing its hooked end 11 to traverse the convex segment of the jaw 6. The spring 10 is secured to the handle in any usual and conventional manner, as by riveting, or the like, said pawl 8 thus being adapted to slidably engage the jaw 6 in different positions.
with relation to the handle, thus permitting it to engage various sized ring nuts, or other members to be turned. A perforation 12 is provided in the end of the handle 1 for hanging, or otherwise disposing the wrench in a tool holder, or the like, when not in use.
By the provision of a spanner wrench made in accordance with my invention it will be at once apparent that by holding the jaw at various angles, the tool may be operated conveniently without interference from obstructions which frequently would be the case where objects are positioned near the point where the jaw engages the part, or member to be turned.
The operation of my improved wrench, it is believed, will be sufficiently clear from the foregoing disclosure, to make further explanation unnecessary.
V7 hat I claim to be new is:
A spanner wrench comprising a handle with a slotted end, a curved jaw pivoted in said slot and having a hooked end, a pawl fitted to the handle provided with a hooked end engaging notches, or serrations, in the convex edge of said jaw, a spring fastened at one end of the handle allowing the free end of said spring tobear against the pawl,
and means for limiting the throw of the pawl in one direction.
In testimony whereof I hereunto 'afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GUSTAVE HAROLD WATKINS.
Witnesses E. B. SHUMAKER, ESTELLE WATKINS.
