PATENT IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED CAMP-STOOLS AND CANES.
Spc cificaiion forming part of Letters Patent No. 1 59.898, dated February 16, 1875; application filed December 19, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK A. BYRAM, of Philadelphia,in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Improved Combined Folding Camp-Stool and (Jane; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and useit, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective, showing the cam pstool; Fig. 2, a side elevation, showing the cane Fig. 3, a horizontal section through the center of cane.
The object of my invention is to make a campstool the legs of which when folded will form a cane or walking-stick.
In the accompanying drawing,A B B represent the legs, the former being extended, as shown at A, forming a back to the stool and a lower extension of the cane, when used as such. The legs B B in cross-section have a convex side, b, and a flat side, 11 while the leg Ais wed ge-shaped in cross-section, having two straight sides, a a, and a rounded edge or third side, (0. The legs B B are pivoted on the leg A by means of pins or bolts 0, and when the said three legs are folded for use as a cane they form a cylinder, as shown in Fig. 2. The leg Ais recessed, as shown at a for the reception of the beveled ends 12 b of the legs and buttons or headed pins I) b The seat is composed of two leather or other flexible straps, D D, and a stiff piece, E, of wood or other equivalent material, which will serve to keep the legs B B distended, as shown in Fig. 1. Said piece E has openings e e for the passage of the pins 11 b and the straps D D have similar openings cl for the passage of the slender end A of the leg or back A.
When not in use as a chair-seat, the parts D D and E are withdrawn, and the former wrapped around the latter.
The whole seat may thus be conveniently carried in the pocket, while the legs, folded together as shown in Fig. 2, may be used as a cane or walking-stick.
When used as a chair it will be found that the stiff front E, serving to keep the legs B B at a fixed distance apart, will render the device very secure and comfortable.
What I claim as my invention isl. A combined camp-stool and cane, composed of the three legs A B B, pivoted together at O O, the leg Ahaving the extension A, and being wedge-shaped in cross-section, so as to lie between and separate the legs B B when all three are folded to form a cane, as shown and described.
2. The removable folding seat, composed of the flexible parts D D and stilt piece E, substantially as shown and set forth.
3. The combination of the folding legs A B B, and the seat composed of the stiff front E and flexible side pieces, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 5th day of December, 1874.
FRANK A. BYEAM.
