Description

L. HIRSHQ "Improvement in Folding-Stools and Chairs.
N 0. 127,484. Patented'June 4J872 W Jl A A A wW/ A Hflfl|% 4 m n/vew/Zor UNITED STATES PATENT. OFFICE;
LEON HIRSH, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN FOLDING STOOLS AND CHAIRS. Y
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 127,484, dated June 4, 1872; autedated May 17, 187 2.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEON HIRSH, of the city and county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Stools, &c.; and I do hereby declare the following to be a clear and exact description of the nature thereof, suflicient to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to fully understand and use the same, reference being had tothe accompanying drawing making part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a side view of the device illustrating my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section thereof in line 40 m, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a similar section, the parts being folded.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
My invention consists of a stool, chair, or seat which is adapted to be folded, and, when folded, has its legs and spreader rest in separate chambers within the lower side of the seat, so as not to project beyond the surface thereof.
Referring to the drawing, A represents a seat, which may be constructed of any wellknown form and material. B represents a chamber, formed within the lower side of the seat A, and receives a spreader, O, which is hinged to the seat, and adapted to fold into the chamber B. When the spreader is folded in the chamber B it is flush with the inner face of another chamber, D, also formed on the legs fold inwardly in closing, but when open are held extended by means of the spreader, which passes between the legs, as seen in Fig. 1. When the device is to be folded the spread er is swung into the chamber B. This frees the legs and permits them to be folded over and on the spreader into the chamber D.
It will be seen that there is no projection of either the legs or spreader, and that the latter is flush with the surrounding or adjacent portion of the lower side of the seat.
To open the seat, the legs are swnn g out and the spreader forced up between them, wherebyv the former are firmly held open, and there is no liability of accidental closing. The seat, when folded, can be conveniently carried under the arm or through crowded passages. It
' occupies but little room, and its parts will not catch in the clothes of the wearer or surrounding people.
Having/thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A seat consisting of the part A, with chambers B D, the legs E, and spreader O, and adapted to be folded with the spreader in the chamber B, and the legs over the spreader in' the chamber D, substantially as and for th purpose described.
The above signed by me this 2d day of November, 1871.
LEON HIRSH.
